The Segunda Division or La Liga 2 is the second professional football division in the Spanish football league system. Beginning in 1929, the competition was run by the Royal Spanish Football Federation until 1984 when the Liga de Fútbol Profesional (LFP) took control.

The competition has been known by different names due to various sponsorship arrangements. From 2006 the Segunda Division was rebranded as Liga BBVA before becoming known as Liga Adelante in 2008. In 2016 Banco Santander took over the sponsorship of both La Liga and the Segunda Division was renamed La Liga 1|2|3.

The Segunda Division is contested by 22 teams that play each other home and away in a 42 match season. Three teams are promoted to La Liga each season, the top two teams and the winner of a play-off. The bottom four clubs are relegated to Segunda División B.

The play-offs are played between the teams that finish 3rd to 6th and has been used to determine the third promoted club since the 2010–11 season. The play-offs comprise two-legged semi-finals followed by a two-legged final. La Liga clubs that field reserve teams in the Segunda Division are not eligible for promotion.

Murcia hold the record for having won the Segunda Division the most times with nine titles. Real Betis have won seven with three clubs winning five times - Deportivo La Coruña, Sporting Gijón and Oviedo.

The club to have been promoted from the Segunda Division on the most occasions is Malaga with 13 promotions. Real Betis have been promoted 12 times with three clubs tied on 11 – Murcia, Deportivo La Coruña and Celta de Vigo.
