AC Milan v Napoli Preview & Tips: Plenty at stake in top six Serie A contest
Two clubs with plenty to play for meet at the San Siro as AC Milan host Napoli.
AC Milan host Napoli at the San Siro trying to hold onto sixth position in Serie A with Fiorentina rapidly closing in. Napoli’s scudetto hopes are fading with the Partenopei four points behind Juventus with seven games to play.
Gennaro Gattuso’s magerial reign got off to a great start in Milan, but the Rossoneri have gone three games without a win including a 1-1 draw against Sassuolo on Sunday thanks to a late equaliser from Nikola Kalinic. Milan need to get back to winning ways if they want to hold onto sixth position.
Fiorentina have won six games in a row to close the gap to just two points with Sampdoria and Atalanta four points behind. Andrea Conti is still injured but Ignazio Abate returned at right-back against Sassuolo, Gattuso’s only other concern is Alessio Romagnoli who was forced off after just six minutes on Sunday.
Napoli have won two of the last five Serie A games to slip four points behind Juventus. The Partenopei completely dominated Cheivo at the Stadio San Paolo on Sunday but found themselves trailing 1-0 with minutes to go. Arkadiusz Milik and Amadou Diawara both scored to record a memorable victory that keeps their scudetto hopes alive.
Faouzi Ghoulam is out for a few more weeks but Maurizio Sarri will welcome back Raúl Albiol and Jorginho who were both suspended against Chievo. Lorenzo Insigne will fancy his chances of getting on the scoresheet after bagging five goals against Milan in the last six contests.
AC Milan have been turned into a hard working unit that are difficult to break down. Suso has emerged as the creative force for Gattuso’s side but they will be up against it against Napoli. Sarri’s side play a relentless brand of football with a front three of Lorenzo Insigne, Dries Mertens and José Callejón allowing opposition defences no rest.
- AC Milan have lost 1 of their last 9 home matches (Serie A).
- AC Milan have failed to score in 6 of their last 12 home matches (Serie A).
- Napoli are undefeated in their last 6 matches against AC Milan, winning 5 (Serie A).
- Napoli have scored in 37 of their last 39 matches (All competitions).
- Lorenzo Insigne has scored 5 goals against Milan in the last 6 matches (Serie A).
AC Milan will be desperate to get back to winning ways but need to get themselves out of a poor run of form. Gattuso has openly acknowledged his managerial limitations which will be severely tested with a difficult end to the season.
Napoli have to keep winning if they are any chance of catching Juventus. They will have no fear taking on AC Milan having won five of the past six contests between the clubs with Lorenzo Insigne particularly productive.
