The Roman Derby della Capitale is one of the fiercest battles in Italian football. With Lazio hosting Roma both locked on 60 points, the stage is set for another epic Serie A encounter at the Stadio Olimpico on Sunday.
The Biancocelesti get back to domestic duty after a disappointing exit in the Europa League on Thursday evening. Carrying a 4-2 first-leg advantage to Salzburg, everything appeared in control when Ciro Immobile put the Italians up in the 55th minute, but four unanswered goals gave the Austrian side a memorable victory.
Manager Simone Inzaghi will have to get his players’ minds back on the job with Lazio in the thick of an intense battle for the Serie A top four. Inzaghi is enhancing his reputation this season and a top four finish would be a great achievement for the 42-year-old and his side.
Ciro Immobile has been immense this season with 39 goals in all competitions. Luis Alberto is enjoying the best season of his career with 10 goals and 16 assists, with Sergej Milinkovic-Savic emerging as one of the best midfielders in Europe.
The Giallorossi are coming off an incredible comeback against Barcelona in the Champions League where they overturned a 4-1 deficit with a 3-0 win at the Stadio Olimpico. The Italians became just the third team to recover from a three-goal deficit to progress in the Champions League.
Edin Dzeko continued his strong form with his 20th goal of the season with 34-year-old Daniele De Rossi turning back the clock with a vintage midfield performance. Much of the credit must go to manager Eusebio Di Francesco who devised a way to shut down Messi, Suarez and co. when few gave his side any chance.
Di Francesco might have to rotate his squad here with a range of quality options including Stephan El Shaarawy and Cengiz Under. Rick Karsdorp is still injured but Diego Perotti could be back for the derby.
The Derby della Capitale has traditionally been a tight contest with Roma winning six of the last eight contests. The reverse fixture in November finished 2-1 to Roma with Diego Perotti and Radja Nainggolan putting the Giallorossi ahead before Ciro Immobile got one back for Lazio.
- Lazio have scored in 28 of their last 30 matches (Serie A).
- Roma have won 4 of their last 5 matches (Serie A).
- There has not been a draw in the last 8 matches between these clubs (All Competitions).
There have been 12 goals scored in the last three contests between Lazio and Roma, but this could be a tight affair with so much at stake. Roma have two extra days to prepare which could be significant, but both clubs might ultimately be happy with a draw.
Best Bet: Draw at 3.40
