Kaizer Chiefs vs Orlando Pirates Preview, Predictions & Betting Tips
Orlando have drawn their last three games in regulation time. The Pirates continue to struggle at both ends of the field and Soweto rivals Kaizer Chiefs are facing similar problems. I am tipping a draw at 2.75 when the two teams meet on Saturday at FNB Stadium in the South African PSL.
Kaizer Chiefs FC Form & Team News
Kaizer Chiefs lost 1-0 to Cape Town City at FNB Stadium in their last game with their finishing problems costing them dearly. Chiefs were unable to convert any of their 15 shots and a mistake from goalkeeper Virgil Vries allowed City to score late at the other end.
Kaizer Chiefs coach Ernst Middendorp hinted after the defeat that he had lost patience with Vries. Since then, Chiefs have signed former Chippa United goalkeeper Daniel Akpeyi.
Amakhosi have been in mixed form since Middendorp took over as coach, winning six games and losing four in all competitions. Kaizer Chiefs have showed flashes of brilliance, most notably in a 2-0 win over Absa Premiership leaders Bidvest Wits, but have not stayed consistent.
Orlando Pirates FC Form & Team News
Orlando Pirates have drawn their last three games in regulation time, most recently playing to a 0-0 stalemate against Esperance de Tunis at Orlando Stadium. Pirates enjoyed 59% possession but couldn’t find a winner.
Milutin Sredojevic has significantly improved the Buccaneers since taking over as coach a year and a half ago. Nevertheless, Pirates have failed to clinch silverware largely because they have drawn too many games.
Orlando Pirates have endured goalkeeping problems of their own. The draw with Esperance saw Wayne Sandilands promoted back into the starting XI after being dropped in August.
Kaizer Chiefs vs Orlando Pirates Head-to-Head
Kaizer Chiefs have historically had the edge over their Soweto rivals at derby time. They have won 67 games against Orlando Pirates with 52 draws and 41 defeats.
Pirates have fared better in recent times after winning the last three Soweto derbies. Most recently they beat Kaizer Chiefs 2-1 at Durban’s Moses Mabhida Stadium in November. Thembinkosi Lorch opened the scoring for the Buccaneers before Leonardo Castro equalised, but Justin Shonga fired Pirates to victory in the 84th minute.
Saturday’s derby will be Kaizer Chiefs coach Ernst Middendorp’s first chance to face Orlando Pirates since he took over from Giovanni Solinas.
Kaizer Chiefs vs Orlando Pirates Match Up
After months of unresolved issues between the sticks for Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates, all eyes will be on the goalkeepers at FNB Stadium.
Should Daniel Akpeyi start in goal for Kaizer Chiefs, it will be his debut for Amakhosi. Orlando Pirates’ Wayne Sandilands looks set to make his first Absa Premiership appearance since the opening game of the season against Highlands Park.
Kaizer Chiefs vs Orlando Pirates Key Statistics
- Orlando Pirates have drawn their last 3 games in regulation time (all competitions).
- Orlando Pirates have drawn 8 of their 18 games this season (Absa Premiership).
- Kaizer Chiefs have won 6 games and lost 4 since coach Ernst Middendorp replaced Giovanni Solinas (all competitions).
- Kaizer Chiefs had 15 shots at goal in the 1-0 defeat to Cape Town City (Absa Premiership).
Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates are both in muddy water. They are each battling to bury their chances and neither has found an answer to their goalkeeping problems. Given the similarity of the two clubs’ circumstances, I am tipping a draw at 2.75.
