Barcelona vs Alaves Preview

Barcelona looked great throughout January, especially in their most recent La Liga contest against Valencia, winning 7-1. They demolished Alaves 3-0 in Vitoria earlier this season and I expect a similar outcome on Sunday.

After a surprising 1-1 draw against Getafe in La Liga, Blaugrana pulled a miraculous comeback to beat Benfica 5-4 in the Champions League, scoring three goals in between 78th and 90th minute.

Right after that, they humiliated Valencia 7-1 in front of the home crowd, Fermin Lopez scoring a brace, Frankie de Jong, Ferran Torres, Raphinha and Robert Lewandowski also on target.

During the mid-week UCL action, Hansi Flick’s side was held to a 2-2 draw by Atalanta, allowing them to finish the group stage as second and advance directly to Round of 16.

Alaves Form

Four points from three La Liga appearances in January were enough for Deportivo Alaves to exit the relegation zone, currently sitting in 17th place just one point above the red line.

After starting the month with a 1-0 home loss to Girona, the squad from Vitoria caused an upset by defeating Real Betis 3-1 in Sevilla, Kike Garcia scoring all three goals.

The same player put Alaves ahead after just six minutes against Celta Vigo last weekend, but the match ended in a 1-1 draw. Alaves ended the game with 0.93-0.13 expected goals, 50% possession and 3-5 shots.

Home coach Hansi Flick can’t count on injured Inigo Martinez, Dani Olmo, Marc-Andre ter Stegen and Marc Bernal.

As for the visitors, Abdelkabir Abqar is suspended, while Antonio Sivera is injured.

Barcelona v CD Alaves

Barcelona had a couple outstanding performances in January, winning six of their eight encounters. Alaves are struggling on the road and lost 3-0 to Barca earlier this season, so I am tipping home win to nil on Sunday.

Backing Lamine Yamal to score anytime is also worth a punt, Barcelona’s rising star bagging two goals in his last three appearances in front of the home crowd.
