Real Madrid vs Barcelona Preview, Predictions & Betting Tips

The Santiago Bernabeu plays host to the El Clasico this weekend as Real Madrid face Barcelona in a crucial La Liga clash. Both sides have a tendency to concede goals and with only two points between them on the table it could be a cagey affair.

Real Madrid Form

Real Madrid have been seriously short of form and are winless in their last three matches across all competitions. The 2-1 loss to Manchester City in the Champions League at the Santiago Bernabeu will still burn deep.

After taking the lead through Isco in the 60th minute, Madrid managed to concede two in the final 12 minutes. To add to their misery Sergio Ramos saw red although he is available for La Liga fixtures.

Madrid’s recent form includes a draw at home to Celta Vigo and an away loss to Levante. Zinedine Zidane will want that form to turnaround this weekend and there is no doubt his charges will be up for the match.

Zidane could go slightly more defensive as avoiding defeat may be more crucial. A five point gap is a big one to catch up so late in the season should they lose. Madrid are slight favourites at 2.20 but I can see a score draw and under 2.5 goals.

Real Madrid News

Eden Hazard’s injury ravished season continues as he is ruled out with an ankle injury. Marco Asensio remains on the sidelines, where he has been since the beginning of the season.

Barcelona Form

Barcelona are top of the La Liga table with 55 points, two ahead of Real Madrid. They are unbeaten in their last four matches across all competitions with their last match ending 1-1 against Napoli in the Champions League at the San Paolo Stadium.

Since Barcelona’s shock 1-0 defeat to Athletic Bilbao in the Copa del Ray quarter final the Catalans won three La Liga matches before their 1-1 draw with Napoli. Barcelona can thank Antoine Griezmann for his 57th minute equaliser against Napoli as the visitors were second best for most of the night.

Of grave concern to head coach Quique Setien will be the red card to Arturo Vidal against Napoli. He isn’t suspending in La Liga but that is the second red card in four matches after Clement Lenglet saw red in a 3-2 victory over Read Betis a couple of weeks ago.

Barcelona News

Ousmane Dembele has been ruled out for the season while Luis Suarez is still recovering from an operation on his knee. Jordi Alba is apparently a month away from a return with Sergio Roberto also still unavailable. The Catalans are still sweating over Gerard Pique who got injured in midweek against Napoli.

Real Madrid vs Barcelona Head to Head

Barcelona have won four of their last seven matches against Real Madrid along with three draws.  Madrid’s last victory came in a 2-0 win in 2016 at the Saantiago Bernabeu. Their last match ended 0-0 on 18 December 2019 at Camp Nou.

Real Madrid vs Barcelona Betting Odds

Real Madrid can be backed at 2.20 with Barcelona underdogs at 3.10 to win. A draw is valued at 3.60.

BTTS is listed at 1.57, under 2.5 goals at 2.20 and over at 1.66. A correct score of 1-1 is paying 7.00.

Lionel Messi could be a popular pick at 1.90 in the anytime goal scorer market with Karim Benzema priced at 2.10.

Real Madrid vs Barcelona Match Up

Both Real Madrid and Barcelona have leaked goals this season and while they are the top two sides in La Liga, neither side has been at their absolute best.  Real Madrid have dropped below Barcelona in recent weeks and can ill-afford a defeat at the Santiago Bernabeu this weekend.

Zinedine Zidane will know the title cannot be won or lost on this match but a home defeat would give Barcelona a five point lead. Considering recent form Madrid may be happy to settle for a draw and gain the two points elsewhere over the season, which may lead to a slightly more defensive approach.
