Barnsley vs Leeds United Preview, Predictions & Betting Tips

Barnsley welcome Leeds to Oakwell this weekend in one of the first Yorkshire derbies of the new Championship season. The two teams have had very different starts to the season and I'm backing Leeds in the handicap market in this match.

Barnsley Form & Team News

Barnsley come into their match with Leeds on a bad run of form. They were comfortably defeated 3-1 by Luton in their last home match, with Mallik Wilks grabbing the goal for The Tykes.

The Yorkshire based club have failed to win any of their last six games in all competitions. They also haven’t been very strong at Oakwell, having lost two of their last three matches at the stadium.

Manager Daniel Stendel is without keeper Samuel Radlinger for the game after he picked up a ligaments injury. Brad Collins is likely to fill in for the next couple of months. Mamadou Thiam is likely to keep his place up front for the club with Mallik Wilks sitting just behind him.

Barnsley are priced all the way out at 7.5 with bet365 to pick up the win, which is a reflection of their poor recent form. A draw is priced at 4.00 though that also seems unlikely.

Leeds United Form & Team News

Leeds United suffered their first defeat of the season in their last outing when they went down 1-0 to league leaders Swansea City. The Whites should have no issues brushing themselves down and defeating a weak Barnsley side though.

Manager Marcelo Bielsa has led Leeds to four straight victories on the road, with their most recent being a comfortable 3-0 demolition of Stoke City. Patrick Bamford, Ezdzhan Alioski and Stuart Dallas were the names on the scoresheet. They have also been solid at the back, keeping four clean sheets in their last six matches.

Patrick Bamford has bagged four in six for the club and is likely to lead the line for them when they make the short trip to Barnsley. Pablo Hernandez, Stuart Dallas and Jack Harrison have also proven themselves to be key attacking threats and are likely to feature against Barnsley.

Leeds United are favourites at 1.44 for the match which presents little value. Leeds have covered the -1 handicap in their last four away matches and a bet on this happening again is great value at 2.25 with bet365.

Barnsley vs Leeds United Head to Head

Leeds United and Barnsley have played each other 16 times. Barnsley have managed to pick up six wins in those encounters while Barnsley have won seven of the matches. Their last match ended in a 2-1 victory for Leeds back in April 2018.

Barnsley vs Leeds United Match Up

Leeds United have been among the early pace-setters in the Championship this campaign and should have enough in the tank to get past their Yorkshire rivals.

They have only failed score to score in one of their games so far and should have no problems getting past a leaky Barnsley backline.

Barnsley vs Leeds United Key Statistics

  • Barnsley have failed to win any of their last 6 matches in all competitions.
  • Barnsley have lost 2 of their last 3 matches at home in all competitions.
  • Barnsley have conceded 2+ goals in their last 3 home matches in all competitions.
  • Leeds United have won their last 4 away matches in all competitions.
  • Leeds United have covered the -1 handicap in their last 4 away matches in all competitions.
  • Leeds United have won 3 of their last 4 matches in the Championship.
  • Leeds United have kept a clean sheet in 4 of their last 6 matches in all competitions.

Leeds have been very dominant in the Championship and should be able to see off their Yorkshire rivals with ease. Patrick Bamford has bagged himself four goals in his last six matches and should be able to grab another against a shaky Barnsley defence.
