Head-to-Head

Sunderland have a 62-52 advantage against Middlesbrough in 152 meetings with 38 draws.

Middlesbrough Form

Middlesbrough were on a three-match unbeaten run in all competitions before a 6-1 thrashing at Chelsea.

Boro beat Chelsea (1-0) in the EFL Cup before a league victory and draw against Millwall (3-1) and Rotherham (1-1). The heavy loss at Chelsea in the EFL Cup semi-final followed.

Michael Carrick’s side were dominated at Stamford Bridge and trailed 4-0 at half time. Boro shipped two more late on before Morgan Rogers scored an 88th-minute consolation.

Middlesbrough Injuries & Team News

Midfielders Isaiah Jones and Emmanuel Latte Lath are ruled out.

Defensive trio Alex Bangura, Tom Smith and Darragh Lenihan are also out.

Sunderland Form

Sunderland have slipped out of the Championship play-off places after failing to win in five of their last eight.

The Black Cats were on a three-match losing streak with defeats against Newcastle (3-0), Ipswich (2-1) and Hull (1-0). Michael Beale’s side stopped the rot with a 3-1 home win over Stoke on Saturday.

Sunderland were on the back foot with 8-15 shots and just 42% possession. Goals from Mason Burstow, Abdoullah Ba and Pierre Ekwah helped to seal all three points.

Sunderland Injuries & Team News

Midfielders Patrick Roberts, Bradley Dack, Dennis Cirkin and Corry Evans are out.

Defenders Aji Alese and Niall Huggins are unavailable due to injury.

Verdict

Middlesbrough have had a rest since their drubbing at Chelsea and will be eager to resume their solid Championship form. Sunderland do not look convincing under Beale and Boro can get back to winning ways with a home triumph.
