Preston vs Watford Predictions

Watford are backed to come away from Deepdale with all three points, but it is set to be a close contest given their goal scoring form on the road this season

Given Preston’s poor home form in 2021, this could be the perfect opportunity for Watford to turn around their away form with a low-scoring victory.

  • Preston have lost 2 of their last 3 home matches (Championship).
  • Preston have seen BTTS No in 5 of their last 6 home matches (all competitions).
  • Preston have seen under 2.5 goals in 4 of their last 5 home matches (Championship).
  • Preston have scored 11 goals in 14 home matches this season (Championship).
  • Watford have scored 7 goals in 14 away matches this season (Championship).
  • Watford have seen BTTS No in 7 of their last 9 away matches (all competitions).
  • Watford have seen under 2.5 goals in 3 of their last 4 away matches (Championship).
  • Watford have keep clean sheets in their last 2 away matches (Championship).
  • Watford’s Ismaila Sarr scored 2 goals in the 6-0 win over Bristol City on Saturday (Championship).

Head to Head

Preston possess a 18-12 head to head advantage over Watford, with 13 draws in 43 competitive meetings.

Watford beat Preston 4-1 at Vicarage Road back in November with Domingos Quina, Troy Deeney, Nathaniel Chalobah and João Pedro scoring for The Hornets.

Preston Form

Alex Neil’s side have only won two of their last seven Championship fixtures, but a 2-1 away victory against Blackburn moved them to their highest league position of the season in 10th.

First-half goals from Greg Cunningham and Liam Lindsay set up the win for Preston over their Lancashire rivals.

The Lilywhites have failed to win a home match in 2021, drawing 0-0 with Reading, whilst losing 1-0 to Nottingham Forest and 2-1 to Rotherham.

Preston have only kept two clean sheets in their last seven Championship games and have scored four times during that period.

Preston Injuries & Team News

Alex Neil is missing first-choice goalkeeper Declan Rudd through injury, but on-loan Leicester goalkeeper Dan Iversen provides more than capable cover.

Preston are also missing defender Patrick Bauer, but Neil has blooded on-loan Stoke defender Liam Lindsay straight into the team and he scored in their win over Blackburn.

The Lilywhites enjoyed a productive January transfer window, with new signings Ched Evans, Ben Whiteman and Greg Cunningham all going straight into the starting XI.

However, the losses of key players Ben Pearson, Ben Davies and Darnell Fisher have arguably weakened the side, particularly defensively.

Watford Form

The Hornets lost just two Championship games since the appointment of Xisco, with his only away defeat coming against third placed Swansea.

Watford achieved their best victory of the season on Saturday against Bristol City, winning 6-0. It was their first win in four league games.

Ken Sema and Ismaïla Sarr both got two, while Will Hughes and Philip Zinckernagel were also on the scoresheet.

Xisco’s side have struggled for goals away from home, scoring just seven in 14 matches.

Their last two away games have seen Watford draw 0-0 with Millwall and Coventry.

Watford Injuries & Team News

Watford duo Isaac Success and Tom Dele-Bashiru are both currently out with long-term injuries, with first choice goalkeeper Ben Foster also missing through injury.

Belgium international defender Christian Kabasele is also a doubt for the match.

Given Preston's recent struggles at home and poor goalscoring form at Deepdale, I'm tipping Watford to win with a narrow victory. Ismaila Sarr can score the winner.
