Reading vs Derby County Preview & Betting Tips

Reading host Derby County at the Madejski Stdaium in their opening match of the 2018-19 English Championship season. Both teams had contrasting fortunes in pre-season and will hope to begin the new campaign with a win.

The Royals are coming off a disappointing 4-0 defeat to Crystal Palace in their final fixture in pre-season. They wasted a number of good opportunities and ultimately succumbed to the superior quality of the Premier League team.

Reading were one of the worst teams in the Championship last term as they laboured to a 20th place finish and just avoided relegation. Manager Paul Clement will hope to start on a positive note and lay the foundation for a good season.

Defender Tyler Blackett is unavailable as he serves the last of his three-match ban following his sending off at Sheffield Wednesday last season. Omar Richards and Chris Gunter are both in contention to play while Tiago Ilori and Paul McShane will likely line up in defence.

Derby County

The Rams are coming off the back of a 2-1 victory over Premier League team Wolverhampton Wanderers. Goals from David Nugent and Mason Mount ensured that they ended their pre-season campaign with a win.

Derby begin the season under a new manager following the appointment of former Chelsea midfielder Frank Lampard as boss. The 40-year-old has no previous managerial experience and will be hoping to lead the team back into the topflight in his first season.

Lampard has had a successful start at Pride Park, leading Derby County to four wins in their five warm up matches. He has raided former club Chelsea for exciting rising star Mason Mount.

Nugent has been impressive and will be expected to start at the Madejski. The likes of Tom Huddlestone and George Evans are also likely to play while Matej Vydra could also feature after failing to secure a move to Leads United.

Results between Reading and Derby County have been evenly split in the last five matches with both teams claiming one win apiece. There have been three draws in that run and has been notorious for goals.

The most recent meeting between the clubs was a 3-3 draw back in February. Kasey Palmer, Richard Keogh and Tom Lawrence were all on the score sheet as Derby secured a point away from home.

There are usually goals in matches involving Reading and Derby County. Both teams enjoy playing on the front foot and should serve up another exciting contest on Friday.

However, Reading have looked out of sorts in last few weeks especially in defence. McShane and Ilori have been shaky in recent matches and are likely struggle against Vydra and Nugent in the Derby attack.
