The Steel City derby takes center stage on Friday as Sheffield United host Sheffield Wednesday in a Championship clash at Bramall Lane. The hosts are among the frontrunners in the league this season and are favourites to claim a win over their struggling rivals.

Sheffield United

The Blades are coming off a disappointing 1-0 defeat to fellow promotion chasers Nottingham Forest in their previous league outing. It was an uncharacteristically poor performance from Chris Wilder's team as they struggled to find their usual cutting edge in attack.

United have been impressive this season having claimed nine wins and two draws from their 16 matches. They are currently third in the Championship standings with 29 points, just one behind joint leaders Leeds United and Norwich City.

Billy Sharp is the standout player for Sheffield United this season with 10 goals in 14 matches. The striker was nominated for the Championship player of the month for October and will be one to watch on Friday.

Sheffield Wednesday

The Owls suffered a humiliating defeat in in their last Championship fixture as they were beaten 4-0 at home by Norwich City. It was yet another poor display from Wednesday as they were completely outclassed by the Canaries.

Jos Luhukay's men have struggled this season having claimed just five wins in 16 matches. They have lost their last four fixtures and are currently 17th in the standings with 19 points, just four above the drop zone.

Lucas Joao is the top scorer for Wednesday having netted five goals in 13 appearances for the club. The striker should continue to lead the line for the visitors despite not finding the net in his last four matches.

There have been 88 previous Steel City derbies with Wednesday just edging the head-to-head by 30 wins to 29. United however have claimed the upper hand in recent meetings with two victories and three draws in the last six fixtures.

The hosts were unbeaten over two matches against their local rivals last season. They earned a 4-2 victory away from home before settling for a goalless draw at Bramall Lane in the reverse fixture.

Sharp will be the one to watch for Sheffield United on Friday as he looks to continue his excellent season. The striker has scored 10 goals this season and will trouble the Wednesday defence which has been breached 30 times already.

Joao remains the key man for the visitors despite failing to score in his last four matches for the club. The striker appears slightly short of confidence at the moment and could find It hard against John Egan and Martin Cranie in the United defence.
