Sunderland will be confident after a big home victory over Sheffield United. Portsmouth’s away form is poor and the Black Cats can notch a high-scoring win at the Stadium of Light.

Head to Head

Sunderland have a 42-37 advantage against Portsmouth in 114 meetings with 35 draws. The Black Cats beat Pompey 3-1 in the reverse fixture in August.

Sunderland Form

Sunderland have kept chase with the Championship’s automatic promotion places after winning four of their last seven. The Black Cats are fourth and trail league leaders Leeds by just five points.

Regis Le Bris’ side are unbeaten in 12 matches at home this season and have won eight. Sunderland beat Norwich 2-1 at home before dropping points in a 2-2 draw at Blackburn and a 1-0 loss to Stoke.

The Wearside outfit hit back with a 2-1 home victory against fellow promotion chasers Sheffield United. Sunderland struck twice on the counter-attack as Eliezer Mayenda and Wilson Isidor hit the net in the first half.

Sunderland Injuries

Defenders Niall Huggins, Jenson Seelt and Dan Ballard won’t feature here due to injury.

Forwards Ahmed Abdullahi, Romaine Mundle, Tom Watson and Chris Rigg are sidelined through injury.

Midfield pair Salis Abdul Samed and Alan Browne are also unavailable due to respective injuries.

Portsmouth Form

Portsmouth are outside the Championship relegation places by just one point. Four wins from nine has eased pressure slightly on the south coast club.

Pompey continue to struggle on the road and have won once away this season - a 2-1 victory at QPR in October. They are winless in seven away games since, including successive losses at Derby (4-0), Watford (2-1) and Bristol City (3-0).

John Mousinho’s team recovered after the Bristol City loss and beat Swansea 4-0 at home. Josh Murphy, Paddy Lane, Ryley Towler and Colby Bishop struck to secure the points.

Portsmouth Injuries

Defensive duo Ibane Bowat and Jacob Farrell are ruled out with injuries.

Midfielders Conor Shaughnessy and Regan Poole are injured and sidelined here.

Forwards Mark O’Mahony, Kusini Yengi and Harvey Blair are set to miss out through injury.

Verdict

Sunderland are one of the best home teams in the Championship and can beat Portsmouth on Sunday. Pompey have one of the worst defensive records in the division and are unlikely to contain an in-form Sunderland.
