Galatasaray v Istanbul Basaksehir Preview & Tips: Top spot up for grabs in Turkey
The top two sides in Turkey face off at the Türk Telekom Stadium in a match that could decide the Süper Lig title.
Galatasaray host Istanbul Basaksehir in an Istanbul derby that could have major implications in the Süper Lig title race. With the Lions two points behind leaders Basaksehir, a win at the Türk Telekom Stadium will take them to the summit with just five games remaining.
Galatasary have underperformed in recent seasons but are aiming to win their first Süper Lig title since 2015. Manager Fatih Terim took over the Lions in December for his fourth spell in charge and has resurrected Galatasary’s season on the back of sensational home form.
Bafétimbi Gomis has been in top form since moving to Istanbul, his 26 Süper Lig goals a league high. The 32-year-old has scored 10 goals in his last six home games and has formed a ruthless partnership alongside Sofiane Feghouli, Garry Rodrigues and Younès Belhanda.
Galatasary boast the most potent attack in the Süper Lig this season with 63 goals. Terim has a full strength squad to choose from as the Lions look to jump above their Istanbul rivals into first position.
Istanbul Basaksehir are the new kids on the block in Turkey having first reached the Süper Lig in 2007-08. They achieved their best finish last season as runners-up behind Besiktas and weren’t disgraced in the Europa League. The league leaders have won three games in a row with a 1-0 win against Yeni Malatyaspor last time out.
Manager Abdullah Avci has been in charge since 2014 and assembled a tough and talented squad. Emmanuel Adebayor leads the way with 12 Süper Lig goals while attacking midfielder Edin Visca is on fire with 10 goals and 15 assists in all competitions.
37-year-old captain Emre is still going strong with Júnior Caiçara and Gaël Clichy providing attacking intent and assists from the full-back positions. Márcio Mossoró and Stefano Napoleoni are out injured for the away side.
Istanbul Basaksehir thumped Galatasary 5-1 in the reverse fixture in November with Emmanuel Adebayor bagging a hat-trick. Başakşehir have won the last four meetings against Galatasary including a 2-1 win in the previous encounter at the Türk Telekom Stadium.
- Galatasary are undefeated in their last 24 home matches (All competitions).
- Galatasary have won their last 14 home matches (All competitions).
- Galatasary have scored 47 goals in their last 14 home matches at an average of 3.36 a game (All competitions).
- Istanbul Basaksehir have scored in 19 of their last 21 away matches (All competitions).
- Istanbul Basaksehir have defeated Galatasary in the last 4 matches (All competitions).
Galatasary have a fearsome home record having won their last 14 matches at the Türk Telekom Stadium. The atmosphere will be electric and the Lions certainly have enough weapons including Gomis that can trouble the Basaksehir defence.
Expect manager Fatih Terim to mastermind another victory for Galatasary’s at home with Gomis to score once again.
