The Turkmenistan Yokary Liga was founded in 1992. In 2019 FC Altyn Asyr equaled Köpetdag Aşgabat's record of winning six titles. Altyn Asyr won six straight league titles from 2014-2019.
On February 2020, the Turkmenistan Football Federation announced that the season would involve eight teams. The 2020 season was suspended on 23 March 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic but resumed on 19 April.
