Sunday evening promises to provide one of the more exciting UEFA Champions League finals in recent memory. Bayern Munich and PSG both enjoy pushing the attacking limits which often leaves the back door open.

This match promises much despite Munich being comfortable favourites. The German champions rightly hold that tag going into the final but it is a dangerous tag to have, especially considering the team they come up against.

Munich may have dispatched Barcelona, Chelsea (over 2 legs) and Lyon by a combined 15-3 scoreline but that stat can be slightly misleading. Hans-Dieter Flick’s men have been sensational, of that there is no doubt, but they are far from invincible.

Against Barcelona in the quarter final, Bayern Munich could easily have been two down before they actually got themselves on the score sheet. Barca eventually ran out of steam and confidence to get smashed 8-2 but there is hope considering the regularity in which the Spanish giants managed to get in behind the Munich defence.

A similar story unfolded in the semi final against Lyon who were, like Barcelona, wasteful with opportunities. Serge Gnabry’s brilliant goal settled the Munich nerves in that encounter but Lyon still created enough opportunities.

Flick turned Bayern’s season around when he was appointed, thanks in the main to his change in tactics. A high-press, high intensity game has worked for the German champions as they tend to force errors from opponents deep inside their own halves.

The problem with that is that the high-press forces the entire team to push up and press. This leaves acres of space behind the defensive line, something a team with pace can take advantage of – have I mentioned Kylian Mbappe and Neymar?

Another strength of Munich is their full backs. Alphonso Davies and Joshua Kimmich have been sublime for The Bavarians. They offer the width which allows the wingers to tuck in and support Robert Lewandowski but while they offer so much going forward, they are inexperienced at full back.

Davies is a converted winger so defensively he can be exploited. With Kylian Mbappe running down his channel supported by Angel Di Maria, Davies won’t be allowed a moments respite.

Obviously, Munich could change tactics to be slightly more conservative against PSG’s pace but that will be going against what has made them successful this season.

I think it is safe to assume that PSG will get chances to score, it is about whether they can be clinical with those chances. Bayern will certainly create, and history suggests score a few so PSG will have to find two or even three goals if they want to win in 90 minutes.

In order for that to happen Neymar will have to finish off a chance or two. He has been brilliant in the last two matches, many say he’s playing his best football since leaving Barcelona, but he has been wasteful in front of goal – PSG cannot afford that on Sunday.

Expect a big performance from the Brazilian star. He has been desperate to prove his move to PSG, and away from Messi, was worth it.

While PSG’s attacking players know that there will be space to use it is just as important that they get the defensive side right. Can their midfield and defence deal with the pace and intensity of Munich?

Firstly, they will need to cut down the space in which Thomas Muller thrives. Muller, who was looking likely to leave the club not long ago, has found his best form once again under Flick, but even if PSG do manage to control him – can they at the same time keep Serge Gnabry, Ivan Perisic, Thiago and Davies quiet?

PSG to win

Bayern are favourites but I feel the bookies have been kind with PSG’s odds. At 11/5 the French champions offer superb value and should they be clinical I feel they have a strong chance of winning the match.

Over 3.5 Goals

With both sides going for the jugular I expect to see goals. Who wouldn’t with Serge Gnabry, Robert Lewandowski, Neymar and Kylian Mbappe on the park? Over 3.5 goals will form part of my Same Game Multi bet.

Alphonso Davies to be booked

Davies can be found wanting defensively and as already mentioned previously, Kylian Mbappe and Angel Di Maria will be running down his channel consistently. There is sure to be a rash challenge or two in there.
