Benfica suffered two defeats either side of a brief new year break. They lost 1-0 to Sporting CP in the Lisbon derby and 2-1 against Braga, the losses giving their title aspirations taking a blow.

The Eagles bounced back by knocking Braga out of the League Cup semi-finals, Angel Di Maria scoring twice in a 3-0 victory. They beat Sporting CP in a penalty shootout to claim the title, the game ending 1-1 after 90 minutes.

Bruno Lage’s side came from behind to 3-1 win at Farense and advance to the Portuguese Cup quarter-finals. Andreas Schjelderup, Arthur Cabral and Alexander Bah scored inside five minutes to overturn an early deficit.

Leandro Barreiro was an unlikely hat-trick hero in a 4-0 win against Famalicao on Friday. Schjelderup registered two assists as he solidifies his spot in the starting side.

Barcelona were thankful for the new year break after losing their final two matches in 2024. They eased back into action with a 4-0 win at Barbastro in the Copa del Rey.

Hansi Flick’s side went to Saudi Arabia where they picked up the Super Cup trophy. Gavi and Lamine Yamal scored in a 2-0 win against Athletic Bilbao before Raphinha scored twice in the final, a 5-2 victory over Real Madrid.

The Catalan club returned home where they thrashed Real Betis 5-1 in the Copa del Rey.

Barca are coming off a disappointing 1-1 draw at Getafe where they had 78% possession and 3.50-1.17 expected goals.

Renato Sanches is on the treatment table once more but winger Tiago Gouveia is getting close to returning to action.

Angel Di Maria could come back into the side after suffering an injury in Faro.

Barcelona goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen is out for the season after suffering a patellar tendon rupture.

Inigo Martínez, Marc Bernal and Dani Olmo are injured.
