Gent vs Maccabi Haifa Preview

Gent finally returned to winning ways last week in Belgium by beating Eupen. They deserved more than a 1-0 loss in the first leg, so I will back home win here since Maccabi Haifa struggled in Israel on Sunday.

  • Gent have won their last 6 home matches (Conference League).
  • Gent beat Eupen 2-0 last weekend (First Division A).
  • Maccabi Haifa have lost 3 of their last 4 away matches (Conference League).

Head to Head

Last week’s duel in Germany was the first head to head encounter between these two sides.

Maccabi Haifa won 1-0.

Gent Form

Gent’s loss against Maccabi Haifa last week was their fourth consecutive across competitions, but they finally managed to end that negative streak last weekend in the First Division A.

De Buffalo’s were victorious on the road against Eupen 2-0 with Hong Hyun-Seok and Matisse Samoise hitting the target. Earlier this month, they suffered back to back league defeats against Cercle Brugge 2-1, Anderlecht 1-0 and St Truiden 4-1.

Gent currently sit in 5th place in the Belgian top flight with 42 points gathered through 26 matches, which is 20 points behind the current table leaders Union St Gilloise.

Gent Injuries & Team News

Paul Nardi, Andrew Hjulsager, Sven Kums and Daisuke Yokota are injured.

Maccabi Haifa Form

Judging by the stats, Maccabi Haifa undeservedly won the first match against Gent, having 0.57-1.65 goals, 47% possession and 6-20 in shots. The only goal was scored by Frantz Pierrot in the second half.

They failed to connect to that win and earned just one point last weekend at home against Hapoel Haifa in the Israeli Ligat Haal, but still sit at top of the standings with three-point advantage over 2nd placed Maccabi Tel Aviv.

Maccabi Haifa dropped into the Conference League playoffs after winning 3rd place in the Europa League Group F. They couldn’t compete against Rennes and Villarreal who finished way ahead. The only victory was secured against Panathinaikos 2-1 in the final round.

Maccabi Haifa Injuries & Team News

Sun Menehem, Dolev Haziza, Erik Shuranov, Ilay Hajaj and Mahmoud Jaber are injured.

Verdict

Tradition says Maccabi Haifa struggle in all their European road games. Gent ended their losing run last weekend and looked solid last week in the first match, so I will back the home win here.
