Aberdeen vs Burnley Preview & Betting Tips
Aberdeen and Burnley face each other at the Pittodrie Stadium in a Europa League second round qualifying fixture on Thursday. The English team are making their debut in the competition, while Aberdeen are looking to reach the group phase for the first time since the 2007-08 season.
The Dons have qualified for the Europa League in each of the last five seasons but have failed to progress beyond the preliminary rounds. They reached the third round of last year’s competition where they were beaten by Cypriot club Apollon Limassol.
Aberdeen’s best performance in the Europa League came in the 2007-08 season when they reached the round robin stage. They failed to make it out of the group after finishing third in the standings.
The Scottish outfit have been solid in their recent outings as they are currently on a 10-match unbeaten run. However, they head into the tie on the back of a 1-1 draw against English Championship team West Bromwich Albion.
Sam Cosgrove is likely to start after scoring his first goal since January in the tie against West Brom. Kari Anarson and Chris Forrest are expected to feature on Thursday, while Mark Reynolds and Scott McKenna could line up in defence.
The Clarets are making their debut in the Europa League and first appearance in European football since the 1960-61 season. They reached the quarterfinal in that competition and will be hoping for a similar run this time around.
The English Premier League team are coming off a 3-2 victory over Championship outfit Preston North End in a club friendly. Aaron Lennon, Dan Agyei and Dwight McNeil all got on the score-sheet as Burnley claimed their second consecutive pre-season win.
Burnley have lost three of their last seven matches, failing to score in two of those outings. They will be hoping to build on the momentum of their last two wins and secure a berth in the playoff stage of the competition.
Manager Sean Dyche is likely to name a strong line up for the trip to Scotland with Sam Vokes expected to be the lone striker up front. Lennon, Jeff Hendrick and Robbie Brady should all start, while James Tarkowski and Ben Mee could feature in defence.
Aberdeen and Burnley have never faced each other before and both head into the clash in contrasting form. While the Scottish side are unbeaten in their last five, Bunley have lost twice in that time.
Sean Dyche has built his Burnley team to be very solid and difficult to break down. They are usually very tight at the back and will be confident of shutting out the Aberdeen forward line long enough to stay in the tie heading into the return leg.
