Marseille vs Shakhtar Donetsk Preview

Marseille are without manager at the moment and failed to keep a single clean sheet in their last seven games. Including friendly games, Shakhtar Donetsk have seen BTTS four times in a row, so this is the best bet.

  • Marseille have seen BTTS in their last 4 home matches.
  • Marseille have drawn against Shakhtar Donetsk 2-2 last week.
  • Marseille have failed to keep a clean sheet in their last 7 matches.
  • Shakhtar Donetsk have seen BTTS in 5 of their last 6 matches.

Head to Head

Shakhtar Donetsk have a 2-0 advantage against Marseille with 1 draw in 3 matches.

The first leg match played last week ended without a winner 2-2.

Marseille Form

Marseille had one-man advantage last weekend against Brest in Ligue 1 and still lost the match 1-0. As a consequence, the club board decided to sack Gennaro Gattuso.

It is still unknown who is going to be the new head manager, but Jean-Louis Gasset is one of the biggest candidates.

After the mentioned loss to Brest, Marseille slipped down to 9th place on the Ligue 1 table and will have a rough time returning into the Champions League race.

The Sky Blues played eight matches so far in 2024 and the only victory was secured in early January in a cup match against a lower-division side Thionville 1-0.

Marseille Injuries & Team News

Valentin Rongier and Bilal Nadir are injured.

Leonardo Balerdi is suspended.

Shakhtar Donetsk Form

Shakhtar Donetsk were lucky to get away with a 2-2 draw in the first leg against Marseille played last week. They had 0.64-1.42 expected goals, 55% possession and 10-13 shots in that match.

The Miners were behind twice, with Mykola Matvienko and Eguinaldo scoring the equalizers. They are lacking competitive action though since the Ukrainian Premier League is on winter break, playing the last official match in mid-December.

As for the European journey, Shakhtar Donetsk grabbed nine points in their six Champions League matches to end in 3rd place in Group H behind Porto and Barcelona, losing the deciding match in Portugal 5-3.

Shakhtar Donetsk Injuries & Team News

Ivan Petryak, Marlon Gomes and Tymur Puzankov are injured.

The first leg match last week was full of action and goals (2-2) and I expect to see a similar approach from both sides on Thursday. Marseille failed to keep a clean sheet in their last 7 matches, so BTTS is tipped.
