Rennes vs Villarreal Predictions

Rennes conceded only 3 goals in 5 matches so far. Their first duel against Villarreal ended with just one goal, so under 2.5 looks like the best bet.

  • Rennes have seen under 2.5 goals in 4 of their last 6 home matches (Ligue 1)
  • Rennes have seen under 2.5 goals in their match against Villarreal earlier this season
  • Villarreal have seen under 2.5 goals in 7 of their last 8 away matches (Europa League)

Head to Head

This is going to be the second head to head encounter between these two sides.

The first match in Spain was won by Villarreal 1-0 in October.

Rennes Form

Rennes earned three victories in their last three Europa League appearances against Panathinaikos (2-1 & 3-1) and Maccabi Haifa 3-0 to punch their playoff ticket.

They are sitting at the top of Group F with 12 points and even a draw against Villarreal would be enough to stay there.

The Red and Blacks have been struggling in Ligue 1 recently though, losing four of their last five matches and slipping down to 13th place on the table.

Last weekend Rennes lost to Monaco 2-1 at home with Benjamin Bourigeaud scoring a consolation goal in the stoppage time.

Rennes Team News

There are no injured or suspended players for Rennes at the moment.

Villarreal Form

Villarreal also clinched playoffs in the Europa League after winning ten points in their five appearances so far.

They started the campaign with a surprising 2-0 loss to Panathinaikos but quickly bounced back to win three in a row against Rennes 1-0, Maccabi Haifa 2-1 and Panathinaikos 3-2.

The Yellow Submarine is not doing that well in La Liga recently though, grabbing only four points from their last five league duels. They were defeated by Bilbao 3-2, Atletico Madrid 3-1 and Real Sociedad 3-0, while the only victory was claimed at home against Osasuna 3-1.

Villarreal Team News

Aissa Mandi, Denis Suarez, Yeremy Pino and Santi Comesana are injured. Alberto Moreno is doubtful.

Alfonso Pedraza is suspended.

Verdict

A big majority of Villarreal’s road duels in Europa League have seen under 2.5 goals. Rennes do a great job defending in this competition, so I will back a low-scoring affair in France.
