Austria vs France Preview

France have won just two of their last five games, while Austria are flying after claiming six wins in their last seven contests. Das Team has been heavily underestimated here and I see value in backing them with a double chance.

Head to Head

France have an 8-2 advantage against Austria with 2 draws in 12 matches.

They last met in September 2022, the game being won by France 2-0 in Saint-Denis.

Austria Form

Austria’s last two test games ahead of Euro 2024 were a success, beating Serbia 2-1 in front of the home crowd, followed by a 1-1 draw against Switzerland in St Gallen.

After wrapping up 2023 with an impressive 2-0 home victory against Germany in a friendly match, Das Team kicked off this year with another 2-0 win in an international friendly against Slovakia.

Just a couple of days later, they outplayed and humiliated Turkey 6-1 in Wien, Michael Gregoritsch being the man of the match scoring a hat-trick, Max Entrup, Christoph Baumgartner and Xaver Schlager also on target.

Austria qualified for Euro 2024 directly as 2nd placed team in Group F. They had 19 points from eight matches, ending one point behind Belgium, ahead of Sweden, Azerbaijan and Estonia.

France Form

France’s last warm-up clash ahead of Euro 2024 was a disappointment, failing to beat Canada at home (0-0) despite having 1.27-0.40 expected goals and 13-8 shots. Earlier last week, they cruised past Luxembourg 3-0 with Randal Kolo Muani, Jonathan Clauss and Kylian Mbappe on target.

Les Bleus were one of the most dominant teams in the EURO 2024 qualifiers, starting the campaign with seven consecutive victories before being stopped on the final day by Greece (2-2 draw in Athens). They topped the group with 22 points ahead of Netherlands, Greece, Republic of Ireland and Gibraltar.

France started this year with a disappointing 2-0 home loss to Germany in a friendly game in late March, ending the match with 0.83-1.13 expected goals, 44% possession and 10-15 shots.

Didier Deschamps’ side bounced back a couple of days later with a 3-2 victory against Chile in front of the home crowd in Marseille. After conceding an early goal, France scored three unanswered goals through Youssouf Fofana, Randal Kolo Muani and Olivier Giroud.

France Squad & Team News

Goalkeepers: Brice Samba, Mike Maignan, Alphonse Areola
Defenders: Benjamin Pavard, Ferland Mendy, Dayot Upamecano, Jules Koundé, William Saliba, Jonathan Clauss, Théo Hernandez, Ibrahima Konaté
Midfielders: Eduardo Camavinga, Aurélien Tchouaméni, N'Golo Kanté, Adrien Rabiot, Warren Zaïre-Emery, Youssouf Fofana
Forwards: Antoine Griezmann, Olivier Giroud, Kylian Mbappé (captain), Ousmane Dembélé, Randal Kolo Muani, Marcus Thuram, Kingsley Coman, Bradley Barcola

Kylian Mbappe and Kingsley Coman missed training on Thursday but should be ready for this clash.

Verdict

France has had several slip-ups recently, losing to Germany earlier this year and failing to beat Canada at home last week. Austria has won six of their last seven games, so I see plenty of room for an upset in Düsseldorf.
