France made a winning start to the ‘group of death’ as they beat Germany 1-0 in their Euro 2020 opener.

France rattled the frame of the goal and had a couple of strikes ruled out in a game they could have won by a much healthier margin.

The decisive moment came on 20 minutes and it would be a career-low for German defender Mats Hummels.

The veteran defender’s international career was ended by Joachim Low in 2019, but he was recalled to the squad for this tournament.

Hummel’s return turned into a nightmare for him though as he directed a Lucas Hernandez cross past his own goalkeeper for what proved to be the only goal of the game.

He did try to redeem himself later with a fantastic last-ditch tackle to deny Mbappe, but the damage had been done.

France will now look to make it back-to-back wins when they face Hungary on Saturday afternoon, while Germany will look to bounce back when they face holders Portugal the same day.
