Italy vs Albania Preview

Albania lost all their contests against mid or top tier teams in 2024. Italy failed to impress against Turkey and Bosnia, but I think they have what it takes to claim points and keep a clean sheet on Saturday.

Head to Head

Italy have a 4-0 advantage against Albania in 4 matches.

They last met in November 2022, the game being won by Italy 3-1 in Tirana.

Italy Form

Gli Azzurri failed to impress in their recent home appearances. Against Turkey, they ended in a 0-0 draw with 0.67-0.68 expected goals, 55% possession, and 11-10 shots. In the match against minnows Bosnia, they narrowly won 1-0, with Davide Frattesi scoring the only goal.

Italy qualified for EURO 2024 as the 2nd placed team from Group C, winning just four of their eight games. They finished behind England but ahead of Ukraine, North Macedonia, and Malta.

Luciano Spalletti’s men performed well in their two international friendlies in March. First, they defeated Venezuela 2-1, with Mateo Retegui being the man of the match after scoring a brace.

A few days later, Italy triumphed over another South American side, beating Ecuador 2-0 in New Jersey. Lorenzo Pellegrini broke the deadlock in the 3rd minute, and Nicolo Barella secured the final score in stoppage time.

Albania Form

This is going to be Albania’s second appearance in Euro, qualifying once so far in 2016. They topped Group E with 15 points from eight matches ahead of Czech Republic, Poland, Moldova and Faroe Islands.

The Red and Blacks were successful in their June international friendlies, earning two straight victories against Liechtenstein 3-0 and Azerbaijan 3-1, Nedim Bajrami ending these matches with one goal and two assists.

Albania struggled in their March friendlies though where they suffered back to back defeats against Chile 3-0 and Sweden 1-0.

Both sides had some questionable appearances in 2024, but Italy are be ahead in terms of quality and experience. I will back them to claim three points on Saturday and keep a clean sheet.
