Italy vs Spain Predictions

Italy and Spain are incredibly hard to beat with a close match expected. I am backing a draw at Euro 2020 with a penalty shootout a real possibility.

  • Italy are undefeated in their last 32 matches (all competitions).
  • Italy have won 25 of their last 29 matches (all competitions).
  • Italy have drawn 7 of their last 14 matches against Spain (all competitions).
  • Spain are undefeated in their last 12 matches (all competitions).
  • Spain have drawn 8 of their last 12 matches (all competitions).

Head to Head

Spain have a 13-11 advantage against Italy with 13 draws in 37 matches.

They last met in the 2018 World Cup qualifiers. The first match in Torino ended in a 1-1 draw before Spain won 3-0 in Madrid.

Italy Form

Italy have won 25 of their last 29 matches and won to nil in 11 of their last 13 games. They are playing with plenty of confidence.

The Azzurri began Euro 2020 with a 3-0 win against Turkey. They beat Switzerland 3-0 and beat Wales 1-0 in their final group game.

Roberto Mancini’s side did it the hard way against Austria in the Round of 16. Federico Chiesa and Matteo Pessina scored in extra time to establish a 2-0 lead and they held on for a 2-1 win.

Italy beat Belgium 2-1 in the quarter-finals, Nicolo Barella opening the scoring and Lorenzo Insigne making it 2-0 before half time. They defended well in the closing stages under pressure from the Red Devils.

Italy Squad & Team News

Goalkeepers: Gianluigi Donnarumma, Alex Meret, Salvatore Sirigu
Defenders: Francesco Acerbi, Alessandro Bastoni, Leonardo Bonucci, Giorgio Chiellini, Giovanni Di Lorenzo, Emerson Palmieri, Alessandro Florenzi, Leonardo Spinazzola, Rafael Toloi
Midfielders: Nicolo Barella, Bryan Cristante, Jorginho, Manuel Locatelli, Lorenzo Pellegrini, Stefano Sensi, Marco Verratti
Attackers: Andrea Belotti, Domenico Berardi, Federico Bernardeschi, Federico Chiesa, Ciro Immobile, Lorenzo Insigne, Giacomo Raspadori

Midfielder Lorenzo Pellegrini remains injured but Roberto Mancini has plenty of options with Nicolo Barella set to partner Jorginho and Marco Verratti in the middle of the park.

Full back Alessandro Florenzi is doubtful and left back Leonardo Spinazzola is out injured. Emerson and Rafael Toloi are options to start in defence.

Spain Form

Spain are undefeated in their last 12 matches. They have won four of those with eight draws.

Luis Enrique’s side started Euro 2020 with a 0-0 draw against Sweden despite having 85% possession and 17-4 shots. La Roja drew 1-1 against Poland before beating Slovakia 5-0 in their final group game.

Spain fell behind early against Croatia in the Round of 16 after Unai Simon’s error. Pablo Sarabia, César Azpilicueta and Ferran Torres scored to make it 3-1 before conceding two late goals to go to extra time. Alvaro Morata and Mikel Oyarzabal scored as they advanced with a 5-3 win.

Spain beat Switzerland in a penalty shootout in the quarter-finals. They went ahead through an own goal in the 8th minute, conceded in the 68th minute and couldn’t score against 20 men for the final 43 minutes.

Dani Olmo, Gerard Moreno and Mikel Oyarzabal struck their spot kicks sweetly as the Swiss missed three penalties.

Spain Squad & Team News

Goalkeepers: David de Gea, Robert Sánchez, Unai Simón
Defenders: César Azpilicueta, Diego Llorente, Pau Torres, Eric García, José Gayà, Jordi Alba, Aymeric Laporte
Midfielders: Sergio Busquets (captain), Marcos Llorente, Koke (vice-captain), Thiago, Rodri, Fabián, Dani Olmo, Pedri
Forwards: Álvaro Morata, Gerard, Ferran Torres, Adama Traoré, Mikel Oyarzabal, Pablo Sarabia

Spain have a full strength side available.

Expect Sergio Busquets continue in defensive midfield and César Azpilicueta to continue at right back.

Luis Enrique should stick with Ferran Torres and Álvaro Morata in attack. Pablo Sarabia could make way for Dani Olmo on the left wing.
