The reigning champions trailed 2-0 before Mateo Retegui halved the deficit. However, Roberto Mancini's side weren't able to take advantage of England being reduced to 10 men.

Having failed to qualify for the World Cup, the Azzuri played two friendlies in November, beating Albania 3-1 before losing 2-0 away to Austria.
