Poland vs Netherlands Preview

Netherlands were consistent both in friendly games and qualifiers, while Poland barely made it to Euro through Nations League playoffs. I will back Oranje to kick things off with a win.

  • Poland have lost 6 of their last 7 matches against Netherlands.
  • Netherlands have won 6 of their last 7 matches.

Head to Head

Netherlands have a 9-3 advantage against Poland with 7 draws in 19 matches.

They last met in September 2022, the game being won by Netherlands 2-0 in Warsaw.

Poland Form

Poland looked fantastic in their recent friendly matches. Against Ukraine, they scored three goals inside first 30 minutes through Seb Walukiewicz, Piotr Zielinski and Taras Romanchuk, the game ending 3-1.

They gained an early lead against Turkey too through Karol Swiderski, but the Turks bounced back with Alper Yilmaz on target. Poland won the match in stoppage time Nicola Zalewski finding the net.
Poland struggled in the EURO 2024 qualifiers, earning just 11 points from eight matches (three wins, two draws, and three defeats) in Group E, finishing behind the Czech Republic and Albania.

After that unsuccessful run, the Polish team had one more chance to qualify through the UEFA Nations League playoffs. They began the playoffs with a convincing 5-1 victory in the semifinal against Estonia, Nicola Zalewski being the man of the match with three assists.

In the grand final, the Red and Whites faced Wales in Cardiff, with both regular and extra-time ending without goals. Poland emerged victorious after a penalty shootout, securing their EURO 2024 ticket.

Poland Squad & Team News

Goalkeepers: Wojciech Szczęsny, Łukasz Skorupski, Marcin Bułka, Mateusz Kochalski
Defenders: Jan Bednarek, Bartosz Bereszyński, Jakub Kiwior, Tymoteusz Puchacz, Bartosz Salamon, Paweł Dawidowicz, Paweł Bochniewicz, Sebastian Walukiewicz
Midfielders: Kamil Grosicki, Piotr Zieliński, Przemysław Frankowski, Sebastian Szymański, Jakub Moder, Damian Szymański, Nicola Zalewski, Bartosz Slisz, Michał Skóraś, Jakub Piotrowski, Taras Romanczuk, Jakub Kałuziński, Kacper Urbański
Forwards: Robert Lewandowski (captain), Arkadiusz Milik, Karol Świderski, Krzysztof Piątek, Adam Buksa

Robert Lewandowski and Pawel Dawidowicz are doubtful for this match.

Patryk Dziczek, Arkadiusz Milik and Adrian Benedyczak are injured and didn’t make it to the final list.

Netherlands Form

Netherlands were also victorious in both of their June international friendlies. They kicked things off with a 4-0 win against Canada (Memphis Depay, Jeremie Frimpong, Wout Weghorst and Virgil van Dijk appearing on the scoresheet) and then beat Iceland 4-0 (Van Dijk, Weghorst, Xavi Simons and Donyell Malen on target).

Oranje earned their ticket for Euro 2024 by finishing 2nd in Group B with 18 points from eight matches (six wins, two defeats). They lost twice to France, while beating Greece, Republic of Ireland and Gibraltar twice.

Ronald Koeman’s side faced Scotland in their first appearance in 2024 and claimed a convincing 4-0 victory at home in late March. Tijani Reijnders broke the deadlock in 40th minute, while the other three goals were scored in the second half by Georginio Wijnaldum, Weghorst and Malen.

Netherlands were not as successful in their follow-up friendly match against Germany which they lost 2-1 in Frankfurt, despite claiming an early lead through Joey Veerman.

Netherlands Squad & Team News

Goalkeepers: Bart Verbruggen, Justin Bijlow, Mark Flekken
Defenders: Micky van de Ven, Matthijs de Ligt, Virgil van Dijk (captain), Nathan Aké, Stefan de Vrij, Jeremie Frimpong, Lutsharel Geertruida, Daley Blind, Denzel Dumfries
Midfielders: Georginio Wijnaldum, Tijjani Reijnders, Joey Veerman, Xavi Simons, Teun Koopmeiners, Frenkie de Jong, Ryan Gravenberch, Jerdy Schouten
Forwards: Steven Bergwijn, Wout Weghorst, Memphis Depay, Cody Gakpo, Donyell Malen, Brian Brobbey

Brian Brobbey is injured.

Daley Blind has the highest number of appearances for the national team on this roster (107), while Memphis Depay is the top scorer (45 goals).

Verdict

The Polish team struggled in the qualifiers, finishing behind Albania and the Czech Republic. The Netherlands have won six of their last seven matches against Poland, so I expect them to start the tournament with a win.
