Scotland’s first major international tournament match for 23 years ended in a 2-0 defeat to the Czech Republic.

The Tartan Army had not graced the big time since 1998 so Hampden Park was in full party mode prior to Sunday’s Euro 2020 opener.

The Scots started well and had their chances, with Andy Robertson forcing a fingertip save from the Czech goalkeeper.

The visitors grew as the first half wore on though and there was a feeling of inevitability when Patrik Schick rose highest to head home just before the break.

Scotland responded well as Jack Hendry hit the bar and Tomas Kalas forced his own keeper to react quickly to prevent an own goal.

But just like that the air was sucked out of Hampden as Hendry naively went for a needless strike from distance and the ball found its way to Schick near the halfway line.

The Czech striker produced a stunning finish from just inside the Scotland half that flew over David Marshall, who was desperately trying to get back into the goal after being caught so far up the pitch.

Scotland still had opportunities to get themselves back into the game, but they continued to fluff their lines when it mattered most.

They must now lift themselves for a huge match against England on Friday, while the Czech Republic know that a point against Croatia that same evening would see them put one foot in the last-16.
