Germany were the only team to win all three group games at the European U21 Championship. Italy conceded just one goal and should prove a hard nut to crack, this one set to go to extra time.

Germany went undefeated in the qualifiers, registering eight wins and two draws to finished top of Group D. They kept just three clean sheets and conceded 10 goals.

Antonio Di Salvo’s side started the European U21 Championship with a comfortable 3-0 win against Slovenia. They allowed their opponents to have plenty of the ball but were clinical up front, Nick Woltemade hitting a hat-trick.

Woltemade scored again in a 4-2 victory against Czechia. Nicolò Tresoldi, Paul Nebel and Eric Martel found the net as they established a 4-0 lead, taking their foot off the gas in the final 30 minutes.

Di Salvo rested a number of his stars against England but Germany were still too good. Ansgar Knauff opened the scoring before assisting Nelson Weiper, the Germans holding on to win 2-1 in Nitra.

Italy went unbeaten in the qualifiers, finishing top of Group A after earning six wins and four draws. They scored 27 goals with just four conceded, three of those coming against Ireland.

Carmine Nunziata’s side beat Romania 1-0 in their opening match at the U21 Euros. Tommaso Baldanzi scored the winning goal and Sebastiano Desplanches saved a penalty on the stroke of half-time.

Gli Azzurrini secured another 1-0 win against Slovakia thanks to Cesare Casadei’s 7th minute strike. Italy ended the group stage with a 1-1 draw against Spain, Niccolo Pisilli equalising in a close game with a point well deserved.
