France vs Italy Preview

France scored four goals in their six games at Euro 2024, two of which were own goals. Italy also struggled with efficiency, so I am predicting a low-scoring affair in Paris.

Head to Head

Italy have a 19-12 advantage against France with 8 draws in 39 matches.

They last met in June 2018, game being won by France 3-1.

France Form

France collected five points in Euro 2024 group stages, kicking off the tournament with a 1-0 victory against Austria (Maximilian Wober’s own goal).

Second round match against Netherlands ended in a goalless draw, while a 1-1 draw against Poland was enough to advance to Round of 16.

Les Bleus eliminated Belgium 1-0 thanks to Jan Verthongen’s own goal in the 86th minute, proceeding to beat Portugal on penalties (no goals after 120 minutes of play).

Didier Deschamps’ side was knocked out in the semifinals by Spain 2-1 despite gaining an early lead through Randal Kolo Muani.

Italy Form

Italy had a disappointing run in Euro 2024, winning just one of their four games and getting eliminated in Round of 16.

They kicked off the tournament with a 2-1 win over Albania, Alessandro Bastoni and Nicolo Barella on target in the first half, followed with a 1-0 defeat to Spain.

A 1-1 draw in the third round against Croatia was enough to advance to the playoffs, Mattia Zacagni being the hero with his stoppage time equalizer.

Azzuri lost to Switzerland in the Round of 16, ending the match with 0.87-1.02 expected goals, 52% possession and 10-16 shots.

Verdict

Both sides struggled to produce goals in Euro 2024. Seven of Italy’s last nine games across competitions have seen under 2.5 goals, so this is the best bet.
