Germany vs Hungary Preview

We haven’t seen much from Hungary in Euro 2024, while Germany had a good run. Die Mannschaft beat Hungary 2-0 in the group stages and I am expecting a similar outcome on Saturday.

  • Germany have won 4 of their last 6 matches.
  • Germany beat Hungary 2-0 in June.
  • Germany’s Jamal Musiala has scored 3 goals in his last 5 matches.
  • Hungary have lost 3 of their last 5 matches.

Head to Head

Germany have a 5-3 advantage against Hungary with 3 draws in 11 matches.

They last met in June in Euro 2024, game being won by Germany 2-0.

Germany Form

Germany had a good run in Euro 2024 this summer, topping their group with seven points with two victories against Scotland and Hungary, while the match against Switzerland ended without a winner (1-1).

Julian Nagelsmann’s side demolished Scots 5-1 in the opening match, Florian Wirtz, Jamal Musiala and Kai Havertz finding the net in the first half, Niclas Fullkrug and Emre Can finishing the job. They also looked dominant in a 2-0 win over Hungary.

Germans eliminated Denmark 2-0 in the Round of 16 (Havertz and Musiala on target), but then lost to Spain 2-1 in extra-time in the quarterfinals.

Felix Nmecha is injured, while Manuel Neuer, Ilkay Gundogan, Toni Kroos, and Thomas Muller retired from the national team.

Leroy Sane and Antonio Rudiger were not called up.

Angelo Stiller and Alexander Nübel could make their debuts for Germany.

Joshua Kimmich has the highest number of appearances on this roster (91).

Hungary Form

Hungary had an awful start to Euro 2024, suffering back to back defeats to Switzerland 3-1 and Germany 2-0 in the group stages, Barnabas Varga being the sole scorer.

They did beat Scotland 1-0 in the third round, Kevin Csoboth finding the net in stoppage time but that wasn’t enough to advance.

Hungary competed in UEFA Nations League A Group 3 last season, ending 2nd in a strong group, behind Italy, ahead of Germany and England.

Verdict

Germany had no trouble beating Hungary 2-0 in Euro 2024 and I expect Julian Nagelsmann’s side to have a strong start to UEFA Nations League. Besides clean win for the hosts, I am also backing in-form Jamal Musiala to find the net.
