Northern Ireland vs Luxembourg Preview

Northern Ireland have improved a lot since the end of 2023 and notched some big wins at Windsor Park. Luxembourg’s form has dipped, especially on the road, and the Green and White Army can keep winning at home.

Head to Head

Northern Ireland have a 3-1 advantage against Luxembourg in five meetings with one draw. The Green and White Army beat Luxembourg 3-1 and 1-0 in their previous two encounters.

Northern Ireland Form

Northern Ireland are unbeaten in four of their last five matches in all competitions, winning three.

Michael O’Neil’s side were undefeated in three following a 2-0 win over Denmark, a 1-1 draw with Romania and a 1-0 victory in Scotland. Their purple patch ended with a 5-1 loss against Euro champions Spain.

The Green and White Army responded to the Spain defeat with a 2-0 home win over Andorra in June. Conor Bradley scored twice within 22 minutes and Northern Ireland dominated with 17-2 shots.

Luxembourg Form

Luxembourg had a strong 2023 and lost just twice in their final eight matches last year. Some disappointing results followed and the Red Lions have lost three of their four games in 2024.

A 2-0 defeat in Georgia came before a 2-1 home victory over Kazakhstan. Luxembourg suffered another defeat in their following match, falling 3-0 away against France.

Luc Holtz’s side lost 3-0 again in Belgium in June and were outplayed with 1-27 shots and just 28% possession. The Red Lions held on until the 42nd minute before conceding and then shipped two more goals after half time.

Verdict

Northern Ireland are growing in confidence, particularly at Windsor Park. O’Neil’s team can edge visiting Luxembourg and make it three wins on the spin in Belfast.
