After their disappointing run in EURO 2024, Serbia also underperformed in the UEFA Nations League A, claiming just one win in six games to end 3rd behind Spain and Denmark, ahead of Switzerland.

Their only victory was secured in the 3rd round, beating Switzerland 2-0 at home in mid-October with Aleksandar Mitrovic and Nico Elvedi (own goal) appearing on the scoresheet. They failed to connect though and lost the follow up clash to Spain 3-0.

Dragan Stojkovic’s side wrapped up the campaign with a 1-1 draw against Switzerland in Zurich and a goalless draw against Denmark at home in mid-November.

The Eagles were lucky to get a 1-1 draw in last week’s first leg against Austria, Lazar Samardzic hitting a long-range shot which was Serbia’s only attempt on target.

Austria were close to securing direct promotion to the UEFA Nations League A in late 2024, ending 2nd in Group C with 11 points (three wins, two draws and one loss), just behind Norway, ahead of Slovenia and Kazakhstan.

Austria’s winning run has ended when they needed points the most, claiming just one point in the final match against Slovenia, conceding late goal.

Ralph Rangnick’s side deserved much more than a 1-1 draw against Serbia last week in Wien. Marko Arnautovic provided an assist for Michael Gregoritsh in the first half, but they wasted plenty of chances and conceded in the second half.
