Slovakia vs Czech Republic Match Preview, Predictions & Betting Tips

There will be no love lost as neighbours Slovakia take on the Czech Republic at the City Arena Trnava on Saturday. Slovakia are predicted to win this UEFA Nations League match and continue their fine form at home.

Slovakia narrowly missed out on making the qualifying playoffs for the 2018 World Cup and are in a transitional phase. A 3-0 friendly win against a depleted Denmark was followed by a 1-0 defeat against Ukraine in their UEFA Nations League opening match.

Jan Kozak has been in charge since 2013 and will look allow three promising 23-year-olds to step up and become mainstays in the team. Central defender Milan Skriniar, defensive midfielder Stanislav Lobotka and attacking midfielder Ondrej Duda.

Duda has been on fire for Hertha Berlin in the Bundesliga this season, scoring five goals in his last six appearances. Captain Martin Škrtel is set to earn his 100th cap and will provide the experience alongside Napoli’s Marek Hamšík who has 107 caps for Slovakia.

Czech Republic

The Czech Republic are in a bad run of form and desperately need to turn things around. Manager Jaroslav Silhavy replaced Karel Jarolím
in September and will take charge of the team for the first time in Slovakia.

The former Slavia Prague, FK Jablonec and Slovan Liberec manager has a good record in domestic football but this is a big job with a team low on confidence. The Czech’s have lost their last two matches, a 2-1 home defeat against Ukraine in the UEFA Nations League and a 5-1 hammering in a friendly against Russia.

Patrik Schick scored in the 4th minute against Ukraine but they couldn’t hold on, conceding an added time goal in a heartbreaking defeat. In Rostov the Czech’s were not at the races, down 3-0 at half-time against Russia in a humiliating defeat.

Striker Schick is the standout player but Silhavy has to get the balance right in Slovakia.

Slovakia and the Czech Republic have met 10 times with the Czech’s winning five and Slovakia three. The last encounter was a friendly in Zilina in 2015 with Slovakia winning 1-0 thanks to Ondrej Duda.

Match Up

Slovakia have a strong spine with Skriniar and Skrtel in central defence behind midfielders Lobotka and Hamsik. Duda is expected to continue his fine club form in a central attacking role.

Czech Republic are beginning life with a new manager Jaroslav Silhavy and could find it tough. Jakub Jankto and Antonin Barak are strong central midfielders but we don’t know which way Silhavy will set his team up.
