But they were not be denied a place at their first finals in 23 years as five perfect penalties were score before David Marshall saved from Aleksandar Mitrovic.

Scotland are on a nine-game unbeaten run, winning six and drawing three times. They started this UEFA Nations League campaign with a 1-1 draw at home to Israel, but followed that with three straight wins.

They won 2-1 in the Czech Republic with Lyndon Dykes and Christie getting the goals. Two 1-0 wins were recorded at home last month against Slovakia and Czech Republic with Dykes and Ryan Fraser the matchwinners.

Slovakia Form

Like Scotland, Slovakia secured a spot in the Euro 2020 finals with a play-off victory over Northern Ireland in Belfast on Sunday.

The tie also went to extra-time after Juraj Kucka's first-half goal was cancelled out when Milan Skriniar put through his own net with two minutes remaining. But Michal Duris won the game for Slovakia with a winner in the 110th minute.

It was a bright point in a miserable run for Slovakia, who started the UEFA Nations League campaign with a 3-1 defeat at home to Czech Repulic before drawing 1-1 away at Israel.

Slovakia were beaten 1-0 away at Scotland last month, and went down 3-2 at home to Israel. They sit bottom of the group with one point and are facing relegation to League B.
