Turkey host Hungary in a UEFA Nations League Group B3 match on Thursday. Turkey qualified for the Euros while Hungary crashed out, can they continue their resurgence in Sivas?

Turkey qualified for the UEFA European Championship, finishing second in Group H, two points behind France. The Crescent-Stars lost once, 2-1 in Iceland in their second match which came after a 2-0 win against France.

Senol Günes’ side won 4-0 at Moldova and 1-0 against Albania before a 1-1 draw in France. 

Turkey then drew 0-0 against Iceland and finished with a 2-0 win in Andorra. Enes Ünal score both goals in a routine victory against the European minnows.

Midfielder Emre Belözoğlu finally hung up his boots after earning 101 caps. Everton striker Cenk Tosun wasn’t called up.

35-year-old striker Burak Yılmaz leads the way with 59 caps and 24 goals. Hakan Çalhanoğlu has scored 10 goals for Turkey, Cengiz Ünder next best with six.

Hungary failed to qualify for the UEFA European Championship, finishing fourth in Group E. The Magyars won four and lost four, finishing two points behind Wales and five points behind Croatia in top spot.

Marco Rossi’s side got off to a good start, winning three of four, but lost three of their last four to fall out of contention. Hungary lost 2-1 against Slovakia and 3-0 in Croatia.

They bounced back with a 1-0 win against Azerbaijan before a 2-0 loss in Wales. There were two friendly defeats to Montenegro and Uruguay included in a run of six matches from September to November 2011, resulting in five defeats.

Experienced defenders Tamás Kádár and Gergő Lovrencsics are injured. 33-year-old stalwart Balázs Dzsudzsák hasn’t played for UAE club Al Ain since March and wasn’t called up.

Hungary’s squad largely contains players from lower European leagues including Huungary, Switzerland, Cyprus and Slovakia.

They have some Bundesliga experience with goalkeeper Péter Gulácsi alongside attackers Ádám Szalai and Roland Sallai. Midfielder Ádám Nagy plays for Championship club Bristol City.

Ádám Szalai leads the way with 61 caps and 21 goals, Nemanja Nikolics next best with five international goals in 27 appearances.
