UEFA Super Cup Preview, Prediction & Betting Tips
UEFA Super Cup
The UEFA Super Cup is an annual football match organised by UEFA and contested by the reigning champions of the UEFA Champions League and the UEFA Europa League. It is held at the beginning of the domestic season in August each year.
Between 1972 and 1999, the match was contested between the winners of the UEFA Champions League and the UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup. Following the abolishment of the Cup Winners’ Cup, it has been contested by the winners of the Champions League and the winners of the UEFA Cup.
In the 2009–10 season, the UEFA Cup was renamed the UEFA Europa League and the winners of this competition would continue to face the winners of the Champions League in the UEFA Super Cup.
The competition was originally played over two legs, one at each participating club's stadium. However, since 1998 the Super Cup has been played as a single match at a neutral venue.
Starting in 2014, the UEFA Super Cup was moved from Friday in late August to Tuesday in mid-August. This followed the removal of the August international friendly date in the new FIFA International match calendar.
The UEFA Super Cup trophy is retained by UEFA at all times, with a full-size replica trophy awarded to the winning club. Forty gold medals are presented to the winning club and forty silver medals to the runners-up.
Spanish clubs have been the most successful in the UEFA Super Cup with 15 titles. Italian clubs are next best with nine, England seven with Belgium claming three.
Barcelona and AC Milan are the two most successful clubs with five titles each, followed by Real Madrid with four and Liverpool with three. Atletico Madrid are the defending champions after defeating rivals Real Madrid 4-2 in extra time in the 2018 final which was held at A. Le Coq Arena in Tallinn, Estonia.
The 2019 UEFA Super Cup will be the 44th edition of the competition with the match being played at Vodafone Park in Istanbul, Turkey on 14 August 2019.
