UEFA Super Cup

The UEFA Super Cup is an annual football match organised by UEFA, contested by the reigning champions of the UEFA Champions League and the UEFA Europa League. It is held at the beginning of the domestic season each year.

Spanish clubs have been the most successful in the UEFA Super Cup with 16 titles, Barcelona and Real Madrid winning five each. Clubs from England have won ten times, Italian clubs next best with nine.

Manchester City are the defending champions after defeating Sevilla in a penalty shootout in the 2023 final. The match ended 1-1 in regulation time at Karaiskakis Stadium in Athens, Greece.

The 2024 UEFA Super Cup will be the 49th edition of the competition, the match being played at Stadion Narodowy in Warsaw, Poland, on 14 August 2024.

History

Between 1972 and 1999, the UEFA Super Cup was contested between the winners of the UEFA Champions League and the UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup. Following the abolishment of the Cup Winners’ Cup, it was contested by the winners of the Champions League and the winners of the UEFA Cup.

In the 2009-10 season, the UEFA Cup was renamed the UEFA Europa League and the winners of this competition would continue to face the winners of the UEFA Champions League.

The competition was originally played over two legs, one at each participating club's stadium. However, since 1998 the Super Cup has been played as a single match at a neutral venue.
