Liverpool vs Chelsea UEFA Super Cup Preview, Predictions & Betting Tips

It’s the first UEFA Super Cup to feature two English teams as Liverpool take on Chelsea at Vodafone Park in Istanbul. Jurgen Klopp’s side finished 25 points above Chelsea in the English Premier League last season and are tipped to claim their fourth Super Cup in Turkey.

Liverpool FC Form & Team News

Liverpool have emerged as a European powerhouse under manager Jurgen Klopp. The German tactician and some shrewd signings have turned the Reds into a formidable team that play on the front foot and have no fear.

They lost just one match in the English Premier League last season, accumulating 97 points but finishing one agonising point behind Manchester City. They earned some redemption by winning the UEFA Champions League after a 2-0 win against Tottenham at the Estadio Wanda Metropolitano in Madrid.

Sadio Mané and Mohamed Salah each scored 22 goals in the EPL last season to share the top scorer award with Arsenal’s Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang. Roberto Firmino chipped in with 12 goals but much of their success was built on a strong defence.

Goalkeeper Alisson and central defender Virgil van Dijk have become the world’s best in their positions with full-backs Andrew Robertson and Trent Alexander-Arnold vital parts of Liverpool's back line. Central midfield is very strong with Klopp able to call on Fabinho, Naby Keïta, Georginio Wijnaldum, Jordan Henderson and James Milner.

The Reds had a relatively poor pre-season but got it together with a 3-1 friendly win against Lyon before meeting Manchester City in the FA Community Shield. Down 1-0 at half time, Liverpool fought back and equalised through Joel Matip before going on to lose the penalty shootout.

Klopp's side hosted Norwich City to open the 2018/19 Premier League season, winning 4-1 in another one sided match at Anfield. Divock Origi forced an own goal to put the Reds ahead, Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk getting in on the act before Origi scoredt to make it 4-0.

Conceding a goal wouldn't have pleased Klopp but he was more concerned with a injury to Alisson. The shot stopper was forced off in the first half and replaced by Adrian, who should continue in goal against Chelsea.

I expect Liverpool to have another strong season and challenge Manchester City for the EPL title. A win in the UEFA Super Cup will be a good way to start, I think the Reds to be too strong for Chelsea at 1.90 with those odds representing value.

Chelsea FC Form & Team News

Chelsea ended up finishing third in the English Premier League, were beaten finalists in the League Cup but won the UEFA Europa League. The Blues overcame a slow start to defeat London rivals Arsenal 4-1 in Baku courtesy of Olivier Giroud, Pedro and two goals to Eden Hazard.

Two of the main protagonists have since departed however, manager Maurizio Sarri taking over Serie A champions Juventus and Hazard moving to Real Madrid for €100 million. Hazard scored 21 goals and added 17 assists in all competitions for Chelsea, a match winner on so many occasions and it will be virtually impossible to replace him.

Frank Lampard replaced Maurizio Sarri and it remains to be seen how the inexperienced manager will perform at the highest level. The transfer ban limits Chelsea's ability to sufficiently strengthen their squad. Antonio Rüdiger, Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Callum Hudson-Odoi have injury concerns and Gonzalo Higuaín has returned to Juventus.

The Blues had a decent pre-season with a 2-1 win against Barcelona in Japan. Christian Pulisic appears to have settled in well and provides competition for Pedro and Willian on the wings. Mason Mount and Tammy Abraham started the 2-2 draw against Borussia Monchengladbach and were in the starting line up in their first EPL match of the season.

It didn't go as planned, a trip to Old Trafford resulting in a 4-0 defeat against Manchester United. Abraham and Ederson both hit the woodwork in the first half, so Lampard can consider his side a little unlucky but conceding four goals is raraly a good sign.

Chelsea are likely to be under prepared for the UEFA Super Cup which is a large reason they are outsiders with bookmakers at 4.75. The Blues can be backed to claim a draw at 3.90 and a penalty shootout could be their best chance of lifting the trophy.

Liverpool vs Chelsea Head to Head

These clubs have a long history with Liverpool holding a 72-59 advantage with 41 draws. Liverpool won the last encounter, a 2-0 win at Anfield in the English Premier League with Sadio Mané and Mohamed Salah on target.

Liverpool vs Chelsea Match Up

Liverpool have a very strong side with world class players in every position. They have had plenty of time to become accustomed to Jurgen Klopp’s high press tactics, a large reason why they have become so formidable.

Chelsea have lost their best player in Eden Hazard which could be a major turning point for the Blues. The manager that guided them to third place in the Premier League, a League Cup final and UEFA Europa League title is also gone and the new manager will be under prepared against Liverpool.

Liverpool vs Chelsea Key Statistics

  • Liverpool have won their last 10 English Premier League matches.
  • Liverpool have scored 2+ goals in their last 10 matches in the English Premier League.
  • Liverpool finished 25 points ahead of Chelsea on the 2018-19 English Premier League table.
  • Chelsea have failed to win in 5 of their last 6 matches (English Premier League).

Verdict

Liverpool have a stronger squad, a better team and a better manager than Chelsea. The Reds are miles ahead in terms of stability and cohesiveness and I anticipate Liverpool lifting the UEFA Super Cup in Istanbul.

Post bet analysis

Liverpool had great chances to win in the closing stages but Kepa held firm, the match going to extra time where the Reds prevailed. The odds on Liverpool crashed before kick off, credit to Chelsea, but the analysis was solid despite the result.
