UEFA U19 European Championship History


There has been an equivalent to the UEFA U19 European Championship since 1948 but the tournament has only existed under its current name since 2001.

It existed as the FIFA International Youth tournament in its first eight years, from 1948 to 1956. UEFA then took it over and it was renamed the UEFA Under-18 European Championship in 1980.

The tournament changed its rules on eligibility in 2001, promting yet another name change to the UEFA U19 European Championship. This has been the name of the tournament ever since and so any players born in the 2000s will be eligible to compete in 2019.

The 2018 U19 European Championship took place in Finland with 16 matches seeing a sizeable tally of 58 goals. Italy beat Portugal to top spot in Group A while Ukraine pipped France in Group B.

These teams made it through to the semifinals where Italy saw off France 2-0 and Portugal stormed past Ukraine 5-0. Buoyed by their success in the semis, Portugal then beat Italy 4-3 in the final.

Joao Filipe and Franciso Trincao shared the top scorers prize after the pair of Portugal starlets managed five goals apiece.

The 2019 UEFA U19 European Championship will kick off on 14 July with Armenia playing against Spain in the first match. The final will be held on 27 July with the tournament consisting of 16 matches.

2019 UEFA U19 European Championship Cities and Stadiums


Matches for the UEFA Under 19 European Championship in 2019 will be hosted in three stadiums in Yerevan. The Vazgen Sargsyan Stadium is the biggest of the three with a capacity of 14,403 and will host the opening match and the final.

The other stadiums hosting the Under 19 European Championship will be Banants Stadium (4,860 capacity) and the Yerevan Football Academy Stadium (1,428 capacity).

Hosts Armenia were the only team to qualify automatically but the 54 other UEFA nations took place in the qualifying rounds. This started with the qualifying round in 2018 before the elite round in 2019.

2019 UEFA Under 19 European Championship Teams & Squads


Each of the eight teams participating in the 2019 UEFA U19 European Championship is set to take a 20 man squad to the tournament in Armenia.


The Groups for the 2019 U19 UEFA European Championship are as follows:

  • Group A: Armenia, Portugal, Italy, Spain
  • Group B: Czech Republic, Republic of Ireland, Norway, France


The 2019 UEFA U19 European Championship final will take place on 27 July at the Vazgen Sargsyan Stadium. The participants will be determined by the outcome of the group stage, and likewise, the semifinals.


The most successful teams in UEFA U19 European Championship history so far have been England and Spain, level on 10 titles apiece.

England dominated in the early years of the tournament, winning in 1948, 1963, 1964, 1971, 1972, 1973, 1975, 1980 and 1993 before a long drought which lasted until 2017, their most recent triumph.

Spain by contrast have had huge success at the UEFA U19 Championships in recent years, winning in 1995, 2002, 2004, 2006, 2007, 2011, 2012 and 2015 following previous wins in 1952 and 1954.

Who are the defending UEFA U19 European Championship champions?


Portugal are the reigning champions having won the last U19 European Championships by beating Italy 4-3 after extra time in the final.

Portugal began their tournament with a 3-1 win over Norway before losing 3-2 to Italy in their second group match. They were however able to recover with a 3-0 win over Finland before thrashing Ukraine 5-0 in the semis and gaining revenge on Italy in the final.

The standout winners of the top scorers prize at the U19 European Championship in recent years have been Fernando Torres and Alvaro Morata. Torres burst onto the scene in 2002 with four goals in Norway before Morata netted six times in Romania nine years later.
