Ukrainian Premier League History

After the Soviet Union was disbanded in 1991 and the Soviet Championship was discontinued, Ukraine created their own league system. In the first season six former Soviet Top League clubs joined – among them were Dynamo, Shakhtar, Chornomorets, Dnipro, Metalist, Metalurh and four more clubs that had previously competed in the Soviet Top League.

In 2008 the Top League was withdrawn from the Professional Football League of Ukraine and reformed into the Football Federation of Ukraine, officially changing its name to the Ukrainian Premier League.

Tavriya Simferopol won the very first league title but since then the titles have been shared between Dynamo Kyiv and Shakhtar Donetsk. Kyiv won the 9 of the first 10 seasons before Shakhtar Donetsk broke their dominance in the 2001/02 season.
