2020 BMW PGA Championship Golf Betting Tips, Preview & Predictions

The 2020 BMW PGA Championship will be the 66th edition of the BMW PGA Championship, though it has been known under numerous names over the years for sponsorship reasons. The BMW PGA Championship takes place at the Wentworth Club, Virginia Water in Surrey, England and has been held at this course every year since 1984. Prior to 2019 the tournament had generally been played in May but the move to September was due to the US PGA Championship moving to May.

Wentworth Club Course Layout

Wentworth was designed in the 1920’s by Harry Colt but restoration to the course began in 2005. The reason was that many thought the course had lost its value and did not play the way Colt had originally intended. Modernisation was key to keep up with the times and the way golf as a sport had changed over the preceding 80 years.

Re-bunkering took place, greens were done over and holes were lengthened over time. The course remains a challenge for some of the top golfers around the globe but it is still considered fair for club member to enjoy without being overwhelmed by the difficulty.

Originally it was the PGA Close Championship before Schweppes stepped in as sponsor in 1967. It only lasted one year before it returned to its original name. Despite sponsorship the name has generally included the words PGA Championship.

From 1988 to 2004 it was called the Volvo PGA Championship and then BMW took over and is still the sponsor today.

The Wentworth Club has hosted the BMW PGA Championship since 1984 and before that it was by numerous other courses. The Wentworth Club has by some distance hosted the most.

Until 2009 the BMW PGA Championship generally has the highest prize money on the European Tour but the introduction of the Race to Dubai changed that dramatically. There are now a number of tournaments with higher prize money.
