European Masters Golf History
The European Masters began in 1905 and was then known as the Swiss Open. England’s Arthur Reid won the inaugural tournament. In 1939, the Swiss Open moved to its current site at the Crans-sur-Sierre course at Crans-Montana in Valais.
The Swiss Open joined the European Tour upon its launch in 1972, with Graham Marsh winning the first tournament, beating Tony Jacklin by one stroke. The name of the tournament changed to European Masters Swiss Open in 1982 while carrying the names of various title sponsors.
In 1992, ‘Swiss Open’ was dropped from the name of the tournament and it has been known simplay as the European Masters ever since.
The 2006 European Masters will be best remembered for the participation of female professional golfer Michelle Wie, who accepted a sponsors’ invite from title sponsor Omega, with whom Wie was a brand ambassador. Wie’s first, and only, foray on to the European Tour saw her shoot 78-79 for a 15-over par and last place.
Recent editions of the European Masters have been extremely tight affairs, with five of the last six tournaments being decided in a playoff.

European Masters Golf Multiple Winners
There are numerous multiple winners of the European Masters, both before and during the European Tour era. Alec Ross (1923, 1925, 1926) was the first player to win the tournament more than once. He was followed by Marcel Dallemagne (1931, 1937, 1949) and Auguste Boyer (1930, 1934, 1935).
Flory Van Donck (1953, 1955), Dai Rees (1956, 1959, 1963), Harols Henning (1960, 1964, 1965), and Roberto Bernardini (1968, 1969) also won the tournament before the launch of the European Tour.
Bob Charles (1962, 1974) is the only player to win the tournament both before and after the European Tour was founded.
Seve Ballasteros (1977, 1978, 1989), Manuel Pinero (1976, 1981), Eduardo Romero (1994, 2000), Thomas Bjorn (2011, 2013), Alexander Noren (2009, 2016) and Matthew Fitzpatrick (2017, 2018) all won the European Masters multiple times in the European Tour era.
Who won the 2019 European Masters?
Sebastian Söderberg won the 2019 European Masters, his first European Tour title and the sixth Swedish player to win the tournament. Söderberg shot a score of 266 and was tied with four other players on -14 under par including Lorenzo Gagli, Rory McIlroy, Andrés Romero and Kalle Samooja. Söderberg held his nerve in the playoff with a birde at the first hole to secure victory.
Söderberg was understandably thrilled with his victory, saying: "It's unbelievable. I was more nervous in the beginning than I was towards the back nine. I got on a good run and the ball kept going in. I proved to myself that I can play out here."
