A competitive lineup of the world's best players returns to Japan for the second edition of the ISPS Handa Championship. Who will win the latest round of the DP Tour this weekend?

Lucas Herbert will not be back to defend his title after a playoff victory over Aaron Cockerill in 2023.

The Gotemba Course hosted the World Cup of Golf in 2001, won by Ernie Els and Retief Goosen of South Africa.

These are our four selections that could win the championship this weekend.

Christiaan Bezuidenhout

Christiaan Bezuidenhout was in fine form at the start of his season on the DP World Tour and PGA Tour, placing T9 at the Joburg Open, T17 at the Investec South African Open Championship, 3rd at the Alfred Dunhill Championship and 2nd at the American Express.

Bezuidenhout showed some inconsistency in his play after those performances, with results of MC at the Farmers Insurance Open, T20 at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, T28 at the WM Phoenix Open, T24 at the Genesis Invitational, MC at the Cognizant Classic and T44 at the Arnold Palmer Invitational.

However, Bezuidenhout has been exhibiting the form he showed earlier this season, placing T13 at the Players Championship, T9 at the Valspar Championship, T25 at the Valero Texas Open, and T28 at the RHC Heritage last weekend.

The 29-year-old South African golfer missed the cut at the ISPS Handa Championship in 2023.

Bezuidenhout has been thereabouts for much of this season and has the game to win in Japan.

Matthieu Pavon

Matthieu Pavon got off his first season on the PGA Tour to the perfect start, with results of T7 at the Sony Open in Hawaii, T39 at the American Express, victory at the Farmers Insurance Open and 3rd at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am.

Pavon's subsequent three tournaments were average, finishing T28 at the Cognizant Classic, T52 at the Arnold Palmer Invitational, and MC at the Players Championship before returning to form, placing 5th at the Porsche Singapore Classic (DP World Tour), T12 at the Masters and T49 at the RBC Heritage.

The Frenchman achieved a T35 finish at the 2023 ISPS Handa Championship.

Pavon has been in great touch during 2024 and will fancy his chances to secure victory at the Taiheiyo Club this weekend.

Sebastian Soderberg

Sebastian Soderberg produced an excellent result at the start of the 2024 DP World Tour season, placing T3 at the AfrAsia Bank Mauritius Open before finishing T23 at the Dubai Invitational and T41 at the Hero Dubai Desert Classic.

Soderberg shrugged off these performances in his following two events, placing T9 at the Ras Al Khaimah Championship and T6 at the Bahrain Championship, before finishing a disappointing T55 at the Commercial Bank Qatar Masters and T21 at the Porsche Singapore Classic; however, he bounced back to his best with outstanding T2 overall at the Hero Indian Open.

The 33-year-old Swede did not make much of an impression at the 2023 ISPS Handa Championship on debut, finishing T61.

Soderberg has gone close to winning a few times this year and will have a chance to lift the trophy on the Gotemba Course if he can replicate those performances.

Connor Syme

Connor Syme achieved solid results at the start of his season on the DP World Tour, placing T13 at the Fortinet Australian PGA Championship and T17 at the ISPS Handa Australian Open before his form dipped.

Syme could only muster finishing T40 at the Dubai Invitational, T51 at the Hero Dubai Desert Classic, T34 at the Ras Al Khaimah Championship, and T35 at the Bahrain Championship in his following four starts before returning to form by placing T7 at the Magical Kenya Open, T4 at the SDC Championship and 8th at the Jonsson Workwear Open.

The Scottish golfer is debuting at the ISPS Handa Championship in Japan this weekend.

Syme has been achieving top results lately and is the long-shot value bet at the Taiheiyo Club.

Verdict

Bezuidenhout has threatened to put in a big performance lately and will fancy his chances to win the championship at the Taiheiyo Club this weekend.

Pavon has been in great shape and has claims for the title in Japan.

Soderberg has been performing well on the DP World Tour this season and should enter calculations.

Syme has the form to cause an upset victory at the ISPS Handa Championship.
