A competitive field converges at the Crans-sur-Sierre Golf Club to contest the Omega European Masters this weekend. Which golfer will ascend to the top in the Swiss Alps and lift the trophy come Sunday?

Ludvig Aberg will not be back to defend his title after a two-stroke victory over Alexander Bjork in 2023.

Former major winners who will tee off on Thursday include Matt Fitzpatrick and Francesco Molinari.

These are our four selections that could win the title this weekend.

Matt Fitzpatrick

Matt Fitzpatrick was in solid form on the PGA Tour between March and June, placing 5th at the Players Championship, T10 at the Valero Texas Open, T22 at the Masters, T28 at the RBC Heritage, T11 at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans, MC at the PGA Championship and T5 at the Memorial Tournament.

Fitzpatrick lacked consistency after those performances, finishing T64 at the U.S. Open, T36 at the Travelers Championship, T39 at the Genesis Scottish Open, T50 at the Open Championship, W/D from the Paris Olympics, T18 at the FedEx St. Jude Championship and T28 at the BMW Championship.

Other notable results achieved by Fitzpatrick this season include finishing T14 at the Sentry, T15 at the WM Phoenix Open and T21 at the Cognizant Classic.

The eight-time DP World Tour winner has compiled an outstanding record at the Omega European Masters, with results of MC in 2014, 2nd in 2015, T7 in 2016, victory in 2017, victory in 2018, T69 in 2019 and T3 in 2023.

Fitzpatrick has not had the best year by his standards, but his accomplishments at the Crans-sur-Sierre Golf Club make him a contender this weekend.

Erik van Rooyen

Erik van Rooyen was in decent nick during the first two months of the PGA Tour season, placing T22 at the Sentry, T52 at the Sony Open in Hawaii, T25 at the American Express, T22 at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, MC at the WM Phoenix Open, T8 at the Mexico Open, T2 at the Cognizant Classic and T25 at the Arnold Palmer Invitational.

Van Rooyen has struggled to find any rhythm to his game since, with results of MC at the Players Championship, MC at the Valero Texas Open, T55 at the Masters, T33 at the RBC Heritage, T4 at the Myrtle Beach Classic and T53 at the RBC Canadian Open.

He also missed the cut at the U.S. Open before T6 at the Rocket Mortgage Classic, T39 at the Genesis Scottish Open, 17th at the Paris Olympics, MC at the Wyndham Championship and T33 at the FedEx St. Jude Championship.

The 34-year-old South African has made three appearances at the Omega European Masters, placing T35 in 2018, T12 in 2019 and T8 in 2023.

Van Rooyen has had four top-ten places this season and can feature prominently in Switzerland.

Thriston Lawrence

Thriston Lawrence achieved excellent results in the first four months of his season on the DP World Tour, placing T7 at the Joburg Open, T10 at the Investec South African Open Championship, T11 at the Alfred Dunhill Championship and T2 at the Dubai Invitational.

He then MC at the Hero Dubai Desert Classic and Ras Al Khaimah Championship before finishing T49 at the Commercial Qatar Masters, T19 at the Magical Kenya Open, T10 at the SDC Championship and T2 at the Jonsson Workwear Open.

Lawrence's form became wayward from the end of March to the end of May, finishing T65 at the Porsche Singapore Classic, MC at the Corales Puntacana Championship, MC at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans, T36 at the Myrtle Beach Classic, MC at the PGA Championship and T48 at the Soudal Open.

Lawrence has been in better shape lately, with results of 4th at the Open Championship, MC at the 3M Open, victory at the SunBet Challenge Times Square Casino (Sunshine Tour) and 2nd at the British Masters last weekend.

The four-time DP World Tour winner won the 2023 Omega European Masters on debut before finishing T47 in 2023.

Lawrence has threatened to win another tournament lately and will fancy his chances to win for the second time at the Crans-sur-Sierre Golf Club.

Jesper Svensson

Jesper Svensson had fair form during his opening five tournaments on the DP World Tour, finishing T70 at the Joburg Open, T2 at the South African Open Championship, MC at the Alfred Dunhill Championship, T31 at the Hero Dubai Desert Classic and T47 at the Ras Al Khaimah Championship.

Svensson found another gear after those performances, placing T2 at the Bahrain Championship, T16 at the Commercial Bank Qatar Masters, T11 at the Magical Kenya Open, T67 at the Jonsson Workwear Open, victory at the Porsche Singapore Classic, MC at the ISPS Handa Championship in Japan and T17 at the Volvo China Open.

Svennsson's level of play dipped after those results, finishing T53 at the PGA Championship, MC at the European Open, T25 at the Volvo Car Scandinavian Mixed, and T34 at the Genesis Scottish Open before bouncing back to form, placing 2nd at the D+D Real Czech Masters and the recent British Masters.

The Swede golfer is debuting at the 2024 Omega European Masters this weekend.

Svensson is playing well and has a chance to win his second DP World Tour title of the year in Switzerland this weekend.

Verdict

Fitzpatrick will fancy his chances to land his third Omega European Masters as he loves playing at this event.

Van Rooyen can make the frame at the Crans-sur-Sierre Golf Club if he can rediscover his touch from earlier in the season.

Lawrence has the form to secure another DP World Tour title this weekend.

Svensson has come good in his recent starts and can cause an upset victory in Switzerland.
