The DP World Tour and players contest the first leg of the Spanish Swing at the Open de Espana in Madrid. Can Jon Rahm secure his third title, or will others deny him his glory?

Rafa Cabrera-Bello is back to defend his title after lifting the trophy in 2021.

Former world number one and US Open Champion Jon Rahm will be headlining this event and attempt to win this tournament for the third time in his career.

These are our four selections that could win this weekend.

Jon Rahm

Jon Rahm placed second at the Tournament of Championship in his first event of 2022, followed by finishing T14 at the American Express, T3 at the Farmers Insurance Open, T10 at the Phoenix Open, T21 at the Genesis Invitational, T17 at the Arnold Palmer Invitational and T55 at the Players Championship.

The 27-year-old's subsequent eight starts were average to excellent, placing T9 at the WGC Dell Technologies Match Play, T27 at the Masters, winning the Mexico Open, finishing T48 at the PGA Championship, T10 at the Memorial Tournament, T12 at the US Open, T55 at the Scottish Open and T34 at the 150th Open Championship.

The former world number one has been in top gear in his last four starts, placing T5 at the FedEx St Jude Invitational, T8 at the BMW Championship, T16 at the Tour Championship and T2 at the BMW PGA Championship.

The Spaniard has an outstanding record at this tournament, achieving victory in 2018 and 2019 and finishing T17 in 2021.

Rahm comes into this event on the back of excellent performances on the golf course and will be a hard man to stop at the Open De Espana this weekend.

Eddie Pepperell

Eddie Pepperell had a difficult first half of 2022, missing the cut on nine occasions from 12 starts, with his best results being T15 at the ISPS Handa Championship in Spain and T14 at the Dutch Open.

The Englishman's game improved in his subsequent eight starts, placing T11 at the Cazoo Classic, second at the Hero Open, T20 at the Cazoo Open, T8 at the D+D Real Czech Masters, T18 at the Made in Himmerland, T32 at the BMW PGA Championship, T12 at the Italian Open and T28 at the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship last weekend.

The 31-year-old has featured at this event five times, finishing T8 in 2013, T24 in 2014, T41 in 2015, MC in 2018, and MC in 2021.

Pepperell has turned the corner in the latter part of the season with his consistency on the DP World Tour and can lift the trophy in Madrid come Sunday.

Thriston Lawrence

Thriston Lawrence had an average start to his year, missing the cut at the Dubai Desert Classic, finishing T53 at the Ras al Khaimah Championship, T20 at the Ras al Khaimah Classic and MC at the Bain's Whisky Cape Town Open.

Lawrence then found his game with six excellent results on the DP World Tour, placing T2 at the Magical Kenya Open, T9 at the Pecanwood Classic, T8 at the Steyn City Championship, T21 at the Qatar Masters, T38 at the ISPS Handa Championship in Spain and T18 at the Catalunya Championship.

The 25-year-old's form became erratic in his subsequent six starts, finishing T36, T58, MC, T18 at the Porsche European Open, MC and T36 at the BMW International Open.

The South African rediscovered his touch, placing third at the Horizon Irish Open, T24 at the Genesis Scottish Open, T42 at the Open Championship, MC at the Cazoo Classic, and T8 at the D+D Real Czech Masters before winning the Omega European Masters.

Lawrence has suffered post-victory blues, missing the cut at the Made in Himmerland and BMW PGA Championship, finishing T20 at the Open De France, and MC at the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship in his next four starts.

He is making his first appearance at the Open de Espana.

Although Lawrence has not been at his best recently, he has produced excellent results on the DP World Tour in 2022 and can challenge for the title if he can replicate that form.

Louis de Jager

Louis de Jager has played on the Sunshine Tour, Challenge Tour and DP World Tour in 2022, achieving excellent results.

The South African's first 11 tournaments were decent, finishing T10 at Vodacom Origins of Golf Final, T27 at the Dimension Data Pro-Am, T18 at the Pecanwood Classic, T27 at the Commercial Bank Qatar Masters, and T27 at the Tour Championship.

De Jager's next three starts on the Sunshine Tour were excellent, placing T4 at the FBC Zim Open, second at the Sishen Classic and second at SunBet Challenge.

However, his form dipped after those performances, finishing T35 at the KitKat Group Pro-Am, T53 at the BMW International Open, RETD from the Italian Challenge Open, MC at the Cazoo Classic, T14 at the Hero Open, T40 at the Cazoo Open, and MC at the ISPS Handa World Invitational.

The 35-year-old bounced back to the form he showed earlier in the year, placing T3 at the D+D Real Czech Masters, T9 at the Omega European Masters, T41 at the Italian Open, MC at the Open De France and T22 at the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship this past weekend.

He will be making his debut at the Open De Espana.

De Jager is holding form and can surprise the others at the Club de Campo Villa de Madrid golf course this weekend.

Verdict

Rahm has been in tremendous form and is the favourite to clinch his third title at this tournament.

Pepperell has been thereabouts in recent starts and will fancy his chances to go all the way in Madrid.

Lawrence has won on the DP World Tour this year and offers an excellent each-way bet this weekend.

De Jager has been playing well and is the long-shot pick at the Open De Espana.
