DP World Tour remains in Johannesburg for the second leg of the South African swing, with the players competing in the 112th edition of the South African Open Championship. Who will win this prestigious event?

Daniel Van Tonder is back to defend his title after victory in 2021.

The Blair Atholl Golf and Equestrian Estate, a Gary Player signature course, will host the South African Open Championship for the first time.

There are six past champions in the lineup, including Daniel van Tonder, Branden Grace, Graeme Storm, Brandon Stone, Hennie Otto, and Richard Sterne.

These are our four selections that could win this weekend.

Dean Burmester

Dean Burmester has started well on the new 2022/23 PGA Tour season, placing 4th at the Sanderson Farms Championship, T37 at the Shriners Children's Open, T32 at the World Wide Technology Championship, MC at the Houston Open and T54 at the RSM Classic.

Before that, the South African was in great touch by placing T21 at the BMW International Open (DP World Tour), MC at the Irish Open, T10 at the Genesis Scottish Open, T11 at the Open Championship, T4 at the Albertsons Boise Open (Korn Ferry Tour), T46 at the Nationwide Children's Hospital Championship (Korn Ferry Tour), T5 at the Korn Ferry Tour Championship and MC at the BMW PGA Championship (DP World Tour).

Other notable results from earlier in the year include runner-up at the Dimension Data Pro-Am (Challenge Tour), T18 at the Pecanwood Classic and second at the Steyn City Championship.

The 33-year-old's last seven appearances at the South African Open Championship have been excellent, placing T10, 4th, T54, MC, MC, 4th and 4th in 2021.

Burmester has been threatening to win this tournament for the past couple of years. Can he finally do it?

Branden Grace

Branden Grace struggled at the start of the year on the PGA Tour, with his best results being T33 at the Sentry Tournament of Champions, T35 at the RBC Heritage, T4 at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans, T38 at the AT&T Byron Nelson and T24 at the Genesis Scottish Open.

The 34-year-old made the switch to the LIV Golf Invitational Series and performed very well, placing T3 in London, victory in Portland, T13 in Bedminster, 12th in Boston, T18 in Chicago, WD in Bangkok, T28 in Jeddah and T8 at the recent Nedbank Golf Challenge (DP World Tour).

The South African's last five starts at the South African Open Championship have been outstanding, placing T15, T4, 2nd, T7 and victory in 2020.

Grace loves playing at this tournament and will be challenging for the title come Sunday.

Adrian Otaegui

Adrian Otaegui has been in excellent form in his last four starts, winning the Andalucia Masters and finishing T47 at the Mallorca Golf Open, T18 at the Nedbank Golf Challenge and T16 at the DP World Tour Championship.

Other significant results for the 30-year-old include T3 at the Ras al Khaimah Championship, T5 at the Qatar Masters, runner-up at the ISPS Handa Championship, T15 at the Soudal Open, T18 at the  Porsche European Open, T6 at the LIV Golf Series London, T3 at the Hero Open, T13 at the BMW PGA Championship and T13 at the Open de France.

The Spaniard does not have a good record at this tournament, missing the cut in 2013 and 2016 and finishing T55 in 2017.

Otaegui has found consistency this year on the DP World Tour, giving him the confidence to challenge for the title at the South African Open Championship this weekend.

Louis de Jager

Louis de Jager has been consistent lately by placing T3 at the D+D Real Czech Masters, T9 at the Omega European Masters, T41 at the Italian Open, MC at the Open De France, T22 at the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship, T6 at the Open de Espana, 59th at the Andalucia Masters, T43 at the Mallorca Golf Open and 5th at the recent Joburg Open.

Other noteworthy performances by the South African this year include T10 at the Vodacom Origins of Golf Final (Sunshine Tour), T18 at the Pecanwood Classic (DP World Tour), T4 at the FBC Zim Open (Sunshine Tour), second at the Sishen Classic (Sunshine Tour), second at SunBet Challenge (Sunshine Tour), and T14 at the Hero Open (DP World Tour).

The 35-year-old last two appearances at this tournament have been solid, finishing T14 in 2020 and 2021.

De Jager comes into the South African Open Championship on the back of top results and can cause upset this weekend.

Verdict

Burmester has an impressive record at this event and will fancy his chances to win at the Blair Atholl Golf & Equestrian Estate this weekend.

Grace has the game to secure his second South African Open Championship.

Otaegui can feature prominently and offers an excellent each-way bet in Johannesburg.

De Jager has been thereabouts recently and can upstage the others with victory on Sunday.
