The DP World Tour and players return to the Blair Athol Golf & Equestrian Estate for the second time, with the illustrious Investec South African Open on the line. Who will win the second leg of the South African swing?

Thriston Lawrence is back to defend his title after a one-stroke victory over Clement Sordet in 2022.

Past and present champions in the lineup include Thriston Lawrence, Daniel Van Tonder, Christiaan Bezuidenhout, Brandon Stone, Andy Sullivan, and Hennie Otto.

These are our four selections that could win this weekend.

Thriston Lawrence

Thriston Lawrence has looked ready to win another DP World Tour title in his last three starts, placing T24 at the Nedbank Golf Challenge, T5 at the DP World Tour Championship and T7 at the Joburg Open after leading for three rounds.

Additional highlights from Lawrence's year include finishing T14 at the SDC Championship, victory at the BMW International Open, T12 at the SunBet Challenge (Sunshine Tour) and T3 at the Horison Irish Open.

The 26-year-old South African has made four appearances at this tournament, with results of MC in 2018, DQ in 2020, T19 in 2021 and victory in 2022.

Lawrence is in great touch and has claims to retain his South African Open Championship title this weekend.

Hennie Du Plessis

Hennie Du Plessis has rediscovered his touch after three wayward performances on the DP World Tour, placing T6 at the Nedbank Golf Challenge and T21 at the Joburg Open last weekend.

Du Plessis' other notable results this year include finishing T25 at the PIF Saudi International (Asian Tour), T2 at the Jonsson Workwear Open, T12 at the Limpopo Championship (Sunshine Tour), T13 at the Tour Championship (Sunshine Tour), T24 at Made in HimmerLand, T6 at the Sunbet Challenge (Sunshine Tour), T25 at the D+D Real Czech Masters, T10 at the BMW PGA Championship and T14 at the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship.

The 27-year-old South African missed the cut in his first three starts at the South African Open Championship before placing T6 in 2020, T6 in 2020, 3rd in 2021 and T9 in 2020.

Du Plessis has found some form and can feature prominently at the Blair Atholl Golf & Equestrian Estate this weekend.

Zander Lombard

Zander Lombard has been performing well on the DP World Tour lately, placing T10 at the Cazoo Open De France, T54 at the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship, 2nd at the Open de Espana, T46 at the Andalucia Masters, T27 at the Commercial Bank Qatar Masters, T55 at the Nedbank Golf Challenge, T22 at the DP World Tour Championship and T4 at the Joburg Open last weekend.

Apart from these performances, Lombard also finished T2 at the Ras Al Khaimah Championship, T6 at the Singapore Classic, T17 at the Thailand Classic, and T2 at the Jonsson Workwear Open earlier this year.

The 28-year-old's last five results at the South African Open Championship have been decent, placing T15 in 2018, MC in 2019, MC in 2020, T24 in 2021 and T30 in 2022.

Lombard is a strong contender to take the title in Johannesburg this weekend based on his recent good form.

Ewen Ferguson

Ewen Ferguson has been ultra-consistent with his performances on the DP World Tour since the end of September, placing T10 at the Cazoo Open De France, T54 at the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship, T9 at the Open de Espana, T13 at the Andalucia Masters, T16 at the Commercial Bank Qatar Masters, T20 at the Nedbank Golf Challenge and T9 at the DP World Tour Championship.

Other noteworthy results achieved by Ferguson this year include finishing T3 at the SDC Championship, T4 at the Jonsson Workwear Open, T8 at the KLM Dutch Open, T14 at the Porsche European Open, T4 at the Betfred British Masters and T12 at the Genesis Scottish Open.

The Scotsman has featured twice at the South African Open Championship, placing T29 in 2018 before missing the cut in 2020.

Ferguson has not been far off from returning to winning ways and should enter calculations in Johannesburg this weekend.

Verdict

Lawrence is a four-time winner on the DP World Tour and can secure back-to-back South African Open Championships this weekend.

Du Plessis has an excellent record at this event and can make the frame in Johannesburg.

Lombard was in contention last weekend, and a similar performance can see him win at the Blair Atholl Golf & Equestrian Estate.

Ferguson has been knocking hard and will fancy his chances to take home the winner's cheque this weekend.
