The 2019 Greenbrier Classic, officially known as A Military Tribute at The Greenbrier, marks the start of the 2019/20 PGA Tour season, two weeks after the conclusion of last season’s FedEx Cup playoffs.

While many of the top stars are missing, there is still a highly competitive field teeing off on The Old White TPC in West Virginia. Before the first tee shot on Thursday, read about the leading contenders, the best of the outsiders, and check out our best betting tips.

2019 Greenbrier Classic Leading Contenders

Bryson Dechambeau (13.00)

After a super start to last season, Bryson Dechambeau lost his way somewhat during the middle, before regrouping with some encouraging results towards the end, including a tied-12th at the end of August at the Tour Championship. If the American is able to start fast again, he should contend this week. Tied-14th in his only previous visit to The Greenbrier.

Viktor Hovland (17.00)

Will Viktor Hovland be the stand-out rookie on the PGA Tour this season? Everything about the 21-year-old Norweigan’s start to his pro career suggests so, with five top-20s in his first eight starts, including a fourth placed finish in his last PGA Tour event at the Wyndham Championship. A first PGA Tour win will come sooner rather than later, and I am backing Hovland to start the new season with a bang. Making his Greenbrier debut.

Jason Kokrak (17.00)

Jason Kokrak takes his place among the bookies favourite for the Greenbrier Classic thanks to his fine end to last season that went tied-6th, teid-12th, tied-19th, and 14th. The American also placed tied-third at the Greenbrier last year, so this week offers a good chance for his first PGA Tour title. However, while he has featured at the top of plenty of leaderboards, he has not mounted many genuine title tilts.

Sungjae Im (21.00)

Sungjae Im was one of the busiest and most consistent players on the PGA Tour last season, leading the tour in total birdies, total eagles, and rounds in the 60s. The South Korean enters the new schedule after placing 19th in the FedEx Cup - not bad for a rookie season. I expect Im to kick on to a whole new level this season, starting at the Greenbrier.

Joaquin Niemann (23.00)

After playing a selective 2018, Joaquin Niemann completed a full season on the PGA Tour last year and the 20-year-old Chilean proved he has the skills to belong at this level. He finished eighth last season in par-four scoring average and was tied-fifth at Greenbrier last year. Niemann will be aiming for another good start here.

2019 Greenbrier Classic Outsiders

Bubba Watson (26.00)

No player will be more familiar with the Greenbrier and The Old White than Bubba Watson, who has a home at the venue and is a member of the Sporting Club. In five previous visits, the American has finished in the top-20 three times. A fourth top-20 finish is priced at 2.50 and looks a tempting bet.

Kevin Na (31.00)

Kevin Na is the defending champion having won the 2018 tournament by a whopping five stokes. The American has made every cut on each of his five visits to the Greenbrier with a scoring average of 67.50. Given his success and familiarity with the course, Na will expect to contend again this week.

Robert Streb (51.00)

I’m scratching my head as to why Robert Streb is priced at 51.00 this week. The American is twice a runner-up in his past three visits to the Greenbrier and placed tied-13th on the other occasion. Streb has good form also, having claimed two top-fives in his past four events. At 3.50 for a top-20 finish, Streb good provide good value this week.

Tom Lewis (67.00)

Embarking on his first PGA Tour season having cut his teeth on the European Tour, Tom Lewis arrives at the Greenbrier fresh from winning the Korn Ferry Tour Championship where he earned his PGA Tour card. A win on debut may be a stretch, but his form and momentum can result on a high finish.

Greenbrier Classic Betting Tips

I am backing Viktor Hovland to emerge from the crowd and win his first PGA Tour title. The Norweigan has all the makings of a future superstar, and he has the form and momentum to succeed at the Greenbrier Classic.

I am also backing another young gun to make a strong tilt for the title. Sungjae Im is a birdie-machine and should feature at the top of the leaderboard, while Robert Streb’s form and course pedigree make him a strong contender for a top-20 finish.

Verdict

Viktor Hovland can win his first PGA Tour title with form and momentum on his side. Sungjae Im is in contention for the title while Robert Streb is a contender for a top-20 finish.
