The Golf Club of Houston hosted the Houston Open on the PGA Tour from 2003 to 2019.

Five current players on the LIV Golf Tour have won titles at this course, including Paul Casey in 2009, Anthony Kim in 2010, Phil Mickelson in 2011, Matt Jones in 2014, and Ian Poulter in 2018.

Current top-ten in the individual points standings after seven rounds:

  • 1. Joaquin Niemann 134.40 pts
  • 2. Jon Rahm 98.17 pts
  • 3. Dean Burmester 92.24 pts
  • 4. Louis Oosthuizen 83.10 pts
  • 5. Brooks Koepka 75.23 pts
  • 6. Abraham Ancer 71.85 pts
  • 7. Cameron Smith 70.66 pts
  • 8. Talor Gooch 68.50 pts
  • 9. Duston Johnson 67.23 pts
  • 10. Sergio Garcia 65.82 pts

These are our four selections that could win the title this weekend.

Joaquin Niemann

Joaquin Niemann started his season in tremendous touch, placing 5th at the Fortinet Australian PGA Championship, victory at the ISPS Handa Australian Open and finishing T4 at the Hero Dubai Desert Classic on the DP World Tour.

After his strong start, Niemann continued to produce superb results in the LIV Golf League, winning in Mayakoba and Jeddah in four events.

Other notable performances achieved by Niemann include finishing T30 in Las Vegas, 3rd at the International Series in Oman (Asian Tour, T4 in Hong Kong, T9 in Miami, T22 at the Masters, T3 in Adelaide, T7 in Singapore and T39 at the PGA Championship.

Niemann has been the standout player on the LIV Golf Tour this season and has the form to secure another title in Houston this weekend.

Tyrrell Hatton

Tyrell Hatton made three appearances on the PGA Tour and DP Tour at the beginning of this season, with results of T14 at the Sentry, T13 at the Sony Open in Hawaii and T31 at the Hero Dubai Desert Classic.

Hatton made the switch to the LIV Golf Series soon after those performances, placing T8 in Mayakoba, T12 in Las Vegas, T15 in Jeddah, T21 in Hong Kong, T4 in Miami, T9 at the Masters, T14 in Adelaide, T5 in Singapore and T63 at the PGA Championship.

Hatton has threatened to put in a big performance lately and could make the frame at the Golf Club of Houston come Sunday.

Dean Burmester

Dean Burmester won back-to-back titles at the start of his season on the DP World Tour at the Joburg Open and Investec South African Open Championship before finishing T44 at the Alfred Dunhill Championship.

Burmester then returned to the LIV Golf League, finishing T3 in Mayakoba, T39 in Las Vegas, and T31 at the International Series in Oman (Asian Tour).

After those results, the big-hitting South African bounced back to form, placing T15 in Jeddah, T8 in Hong Kong, victory in Miami, T3 in Adelaide,  T14 in Singapore and T12 at the PGA Championship.

Burmester has had his most successful season on the international stage during 2024 and has the form to secure another victory in Texas this weekend.

Abraham Ancer

Abraham Ancer had a solid start to his season in the LIV Golf League, finishing T28 in Mayakoba, T21 in Las Vegas and T38 at the International Series in Oman (Asian Tour).

Ancer has found another gear lately with results of T12 in Jeddah, victory in Hong Kong, T9 in Miami, T9 in Adelaide and T10 in Singapore.

The Mexican golfer produced a solid T8 overall at the 2018 Houston Open.

Ancer has been holding form on the golf course since capturing his maiden LIV Golf title and offers excellent value in Houston.

Format

An invitational field of 54 golfers will feature at the tournament, with a total purse of $25 million up for grabs. $4 million will go to the winner, while the player coming in last will pocket $50,000.

The players will contest 54 holes instead of 72 for all the LIV Golf Series events.

A shotgun start will occur, where the players will tee off simultaneously from different holes.

A 13-four-man team (four players each and two wild-card players) format will run concurrent, with the top three teams earning prize money.

Verdict

Niemann is no stranger to winning this season and has claims for the title at the Golf Club of Houston.

Hatton has been thereabouts and can convert his recent performances into a winning one in Texas come Sunday.

Burmester has been in solid form on the golf course lately and can emerge as the winner in Houston this weekend.

Ancer has been in great touch this season and has the game to win his second LIV Golf Tour title of 2024.
