A star-studded field returns to Torrey Pines for the second time this year to compete for the Genesis Invitational title this weekend. Who will win the third PGA Tour Signature Event of the season?

Hideki Matsuyama is back to defend his title after a three-stroke victory over Will Zalatoris and Luke List in 2024.

Due to the recent devasting Los Angeles fires, Torrey Pines is the replacement venue for this edition of the Genesis Invitational.

Past and present Major winners who will tee off on the South Course this Thursday include Scottie Scheffler, Brian Harman, Wyndham Clark, Matt Fitzpatrick, Justin Thomas, Keegan Bradley, Hideki Matsuyama, Rory McIlroy, Collin Morikawa, Shane Lowry, Justin Rose, Adam Scott, Jordan Spieth, Jason Day, Lucas Glover, Gary Woodland and Tiger Woods.

These are our four selections that could win the title this weekend.

Justin Thomas

Justin Thomas has been in great touch during the opening four events of the 2025 PGA Tour season, placing T26 at the Sentry, 2nd at the American Express, T48 at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, and T6 at the WM Phoenix Open last weekend.

Before those performances, Thomas finished T14 at the Tour Championship, T2 at the ZOZO Championship and 3rd at the Hero World Challenge towards the end of last year.

The two-time Major winner has a long history at the Genesis Invitational, placing T41 in 2015, T54 in 2016, T39 in 2017, T9 in 2018, MC in 2020, MC in 2021, 6th in 2022, T20 in 2023, and MC in 2024.

Thomas has threatened to win another tournament lately and can take home the winner's cheque come Sunday.

Taylor Pendrith

Taylor Pendrith has had an excellent start to his season on the PGA Tour, placing T13 at the Sentry, T45 at the Sony Open in Hawaii, T7 at the Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines, and T9 at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am.

Before that, Pendrith was in solid touch, finishing T22 at the FedEx St. Jude Championship, T13 at the BMW Championship, T14 at the Tour Championship, and T19 at the Dunlop Phoenix Tournament on the Japan Tour.

The 33-year-old Canadian missed the cut at the Genesis Invitational in 2021.

Pendrith has been playing well lately and should enter calculations in San Diego this weekend.

Shane Lowry

Shane Lowry has been in fine form on the DP World Tour and PGA Tour lately, placing T3 at the DP World Tour Championship, MC at the Farmers Insurance Open, and 2nd at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am.

Before that, Lowry was producing consistent results, finishing T13 at the BMW Championship, T9 at the Tour Championship, T12 at the Amgen Irish Open, T12 at the BMW PGA Championship, T13 at the Open de Espana, T12 at the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship, and T13 at the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship.

The former Open Champion has made two appearances at the Genesis Invitational, missing the cut in 2018 before placing T14 in 2023.

Lowry has been knocking hard lately and can lift the winning trophy at Torrey Pines this weekend.

Sepp Straka

Sepp Straka has been on top of his game since the beginning of the new PGA Tour season, finishing T15 at the Sentry, T30 at the Sony Open in Hawaii, winning the American Express, placing T7 at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, and 15th at the WM Phoenix Open.

The Austrian golfer has yet to make an impact at the Genesis Invitational, with results of MC in 2020, T43 in 2021, T15 in 2022, T45 in 2023, and MC in 2024.

Straka has been achieving top results lately and offers excellent value in San Diego.

Verdict

Genesis Invitational

Thomas looks ready to return to the winner's circle after his recent performances on the PGA Tour.

Pendrith has been thereabouts and could make the frame in California this weekend.

Lowry has the form to go all the way and win the Genesis Invitational.

Straka has been playing consistently well lately and could cause an upset victory on the greens of Torrey Pines this weekend.
