The iconic TPC Sawgrass golf course plays host to the world's elite golfers this weekend. Who will win golf's unofficial fifth Major at The Players Championship?

Justin Thomas is back to defend his title after lifting the trophy in 2021.

All thirty of the world's top-ranked golfers are in the line-up for Thursday's start, with many past and present Major winners featuring.

These include world number one Jon Rahm, Thomas, Collin Morikawa, Rory McIlroy, Hideki Matsuyama, Dustin Johnson, Brooks Koepka, Shane Lowry, Jordan Spieth, Adam Scott, Louis Oosthuizen, Justin Rose, Bubba Watson, Patrick Reed and Sergio Garcia.

These are our four selections that could win the title this weekend.

Justin Thomas

Justin Thomas returns to defend his crown at the prestigious Players Championship in Florida this weekend. He won by a single stroke ahead of Lee Westwood last year.

Before that victory, the American golfer had done well at this tournament in the past, finishing T24, T3, T75, T11, T35 in 2019.

Thomas has finished 3rd, T5, T5, T20, T8 and 6th in his last six tournament starts on the PGA Tour.

The 8th world-ranked golfer has shown consistent performances lately and has a chance to win back-to-back Players Championship titles this weekend.

Collin Morikawa

Collin Morikawa finished a disappointing T62 at the Abu Dhabi Championship but bounced back to form, placing T18 at the Dubai Desert Classic and T2 at the recent Genesis Invitational.

Before that, the world number two placed 2nd, T7, Win, T5 and T5 in his last five tournament starts.

The American has only featured at the Players Championship once, placing T41 last year.

Morikawa is playing well and can challenge for his first title of 2022 at the TPC Sawgrass Stadium Course.

Cameron Smith

Cameron Smith featured prominently in the first two rounds at the Genesis Invitational but eventually finished T33 overall. That result is best ignored as the Australian has been in good touch lately.

Before that, the world number ten ranked golfer placed T4 at the RSM Classic, won the Tournament of Champions in a PGA Tour record score, missed the cut at the Sony Hawaii Open and finished T4 at the Saudi International.

After missing the cut in his first two attempts round the greens of TPC Sawgrass, Smith finished T56 in 2019 and T17 last year.

Smith has had a win and two top-five places in his last five tournaments. He offers an excellent each-way bet at the Players Championship this weekend.

Billy Horschel

Billy Horschel won two events in 2021, finished runner-up in the Race to Dubai and is starting to come into good form.

The 35-year-old American's last four starts on the PGA Tour have seen him put in great results. He placed T11 at the Farmers Insurance Open, T6 at the Phoenix Open, T16 at the Honda Classic and T2 at the Arnold Palmer Invitational last weekend.

Horschel has a fair record at the Players Championship, finishing Cut, T26, T13, T28, Cut, T37, T26 and T58 in 2021.

Horschel is playing solid golf and is the long-shot value bet for the weekend after his performance at the Arnold Palmer Invitational.

Verdict

The Players Championship

Thomas is the reigning champion and can challenge to win his second consecutive Players Championship title.

Morikawa is playing well and offers an excellent each-way bet this weekend.

Smith has done nothing wrong since his last victory and can be in the mix in Florida.

Horschel could feature prominently and is a worthy long-shot value bet at TPC Sawgrass.
